LIFE TOGETHER

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
"Without Christ there is discord between God and man and between man and man… Without Christ we should not know God, we could not call upon Him, nor come to Him. But without Christ we also would not know our brother, nor could we come to know him. The way is blocked by our own ego." Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together

THE ONE THING

Last week we started looking at spirituality. Here's our working definition:

"Spirituality is an awareness of the spiritual-immaterial aspect of ourselves and other persons that determines how we live."

Do you agree or disagree? Why? Which parts raise questions? What are those questions?

Last Tuesday we talked about the statement, "Jesus is the truest expression of human spirituality." Ponder the statement and ask:

Which parts of the statement raise questions? What are those questions?

After concluding that the statement about Jesus is indeed true, we began a reading/discussion of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, According to Mark. Mark's gospel gives us a picture of Jesus the man, who is the Messiah the Son of God. Two subplots run throughout the gospel. The first is the "Messianic Secret." Basically, whenever someone--demon, healed person, disciple--recognizes Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus tells them to keep it quiet. The second subplot is the "Duh-ciples." Basically, whenever Jesus talks to his disciples about his mission, they respond, "Duh... what do you mean?" This continues right up to the end of the gospel (Mark 16:9--if you want to know why there, ask).

Join us next Tuesday at 8 pm in the College Room.

THE STORYLINE READING SCHEDULE

Read through the Storyline of Scripture in 2004.
This week’s reading:
Storyline: Genesis 27-34
Worship and Wisdom: Psalms 11-14

Here are a couple of options:
1. For those with lots of time, hunger, or both, read through all the passages.
2. For those with less time, skim the Storyline passage, pick one story to concentrate on and read that, then read the Worship and Wisdom passages during a personal time with God.

TFB: OUR MISSION
Matthew 28:16-20
Pastor Charlie

TO INTRODUCE PEOPLE TO JESUS
AND BRING THEM INTO A COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS
WHO ARE HELPING EACH OTHER
BECOME FULLY DEVOTED FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST

“GO” – literally ‘as you are going’

“MAKE DISCIPLES” – in the command form

The key meaning of disciple is to line up with The Master in belief and behavior.
2 Corinthians 3:18
Romans 12:2

The key method of disciple-making is transformation through community.
Acts 2:42-47

“BAPTIZING THEM”

Submission
Surrender
Identity

“TEACHING THEM”

This teaching creates disciples who live in responsive obedience to God’s will.

BARRIERS TO DISCIPLE MAKING IN THE CHURCH TODAY

Our lecture approach to teaching
Our spiritual individualism and surface approach to community
Galatians 6:1-2

Once again…
TO INTRODUCE PEOPLE TO JESUS
AND BRING THEM INTO A COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS
WHO ARE HELPING EACH OTHER
BECOME FULLY DEVOTED FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST

LIFE TOGETHER

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
"Christianity means community through Jesus Christ and in Jesus Christ. No Christian community is more or less than this. Whether it be a brief, single encounter or the daily fellowship of years, Christian community is only this. We belong to one another only through and in Jesus Christ." Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together

The Psalmist wrote Psalm 133 praising God for the life together:

How wonderful, how beautiful, when brothers and sisters get along!
It's like costly anointing oil
flowing down head and beard,
Flowing down Aaron's beard,
flowing down the collar of his priestly robes.
It's like the dew on Mount Hermon
flowing down the slopes of Zion.
Yes, that's where GOD commands the blessing,
ordains eternal life.

Think over the past few months. Among the many worship services and Sunday Schools and bible studies, is there one experience of Christian community that stands out? Think about that experience and how you felt. Take some time this week to write your own psalm—in your own words, the way you normally speak. Next Sunday, we’ll have some time to share our psalms.

THE ONE THING

Defining Spirituality, by Dr. Andrew Weil

Read the article linked above, and then answer the following:

Do you agree or disagree with Dr. Weil? Why?

What do you think is the difference between spirituality and Christianity? Should there be?

According to Micah 6:8, spirituality that God desires has three components:
1. Do what is fair and just to your neighbor,
2. Be compassionate and loyal in your love
3. And don't take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.”

Think about the Christians you know. How well are they living the “spirituality that God desires”?

SUNDAY GATHERING: Nurture as Community Practice
Acts 2:42 (2:41-47)

Nurture is a community practice. There are two commitments involved in nurture. Look at Acts 2:42. The first commitment is to the teaching of the apostles, the Gospel. Paul gives a capsule version of the Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1-8. The gospel has two basic parts: Jesus died according to the Scriptures and Jesus rose according to the Scriptures. Very basic. Very powerful. Everything in the Bible relates to this truth somehow. The Gospel is what believe and why we do what we do. It’s necessary, just like water to Spongebob. The second commitment is to the life together. There are two parts to life together. First, life together involves eating together—hanging out together. Second, life together involves the prayers—regular worship together. So how are we doing in YAM? How are you doing in YAM? We took a short evaluation. Here are the average results. Scale: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = agree, 4 = strongly agree

3.17 (1) YAM actively strengthens my commitment to learning the content of the gospel.
2.83 (2) YAM actively strengthens my commitment to living life together with my fellow collegians.
2.54 (3) I actively strengthen my friends’ commitment to learning the content of the gospel.
2.77 (4) I actively strengthen my friends’ commitment to living life together.

As you can see from the average scores, we have some areas to work on, both as a group and as individuals, especially statement 2, 3, and 4. What does this mean for YAM? Here’s our list of “life together” stuff:

Wednesday Bingo
Horse racing
Bowling night
Food night
Vegas
Summer at a lake
Camping at Catalina
Road Trip
Super bowl
Baseball
Hockey
Basketball
El Capitan
Yosemite
Mini-Golf

Here’s a list of individual together stuff (a bit of an oxymoron, I know):
Phone
Email
Lunch
Blog

Now, take it on the road. We’ve got a couple people planning a bowling night for January, but the rest of the year is open. So, if you’d like to step up to the plate, let Laura Springer know.

If you’d like to join the YAM Discussion Blog, send an email to: tfbyam1@hotmail.com and you will receive the sign-up instructions.

THE STORYLINE: Read through together

Here are a couple of options:
1. For those with lots of time, hunger, or both, read through all the passages.
2. For those with less time, skim the Storyline passage, pick one story to concentrate on and read that, then read the Worship and Wisdom passages during a personal time with God.
