SUNDAY COLLEGIUM--TFB Constitution

Sunday, December 17, 2006, the Collegium began a biblical, theological, and practical discussion of the Torrance First Baptist Constitution.

We are on a journey as fellow travelers.
Some of us have been journeying a long time and know more.
Others are new to the journey and have fresh eyes and fresh wonder.
Yet we are fellow travelers.
All have a voice.

So,

Live intentionally.
Look for the fingerprints of God.
Wonder.
Think.
Ask questions.

Bring your gathered bits to the Sunday Collegium, 11 AM in the college room.

GOING DEEPER--A People of the Table

Tuesday Gathering: November: A People of the Table
The Doctrine of the Trinity is confusing. How can God be one God and Three persons? Plus, even if we can get a hold on the idea of the Trinity, what does it have to do with following Jesus day after day? Starting in November, the Tuesday Gathering will be considering the amazing truth about relationship, following Jesus, and theology.

SERMON NOTES--The Faith Of Mary
Luke 1:26-38
Pastor Charlie
December 17, 2006

Mary had a mature faith even as a teenager.
Principle: Faith is not age dependent! Ecclesiastes 12:1
Mary believed in the personal God of Israel! Hebrews 11:6; John 3:16-17; Matthew 22:37-38; Judges 6:12; Matthew 28:20; Romans 8:38-39
Principle: Faith is a relationship with God.
Mary trusted God for the impossible.
Principle: Faith is belief that God is almighty - not you.
Mary walked the difficult path God gave her. John 15:20; John 16:33
Principle: Faith includes sacrifice.
Mary was highly favored.
Principle: Faith is dependence upon God’s grace.
Mary was afraid.
Principle: Faith can exist in the midst of fear.
Mary received God’s message.

Jesus is God’s Savior.
Hebrew ‘Jeshua’, “Yahweh” and “shua” means “Yahweh saves,” or “Yahweh is Savior.” Matthew 1:20-21
Jesus is divine (v. 32).

Jesus is the Messiah King (v. 33).
Principle: Faith is hearing and receiving God’s truth.
Mary humbly and willingly surrendered to God’s will. 2 Corinthians 8:5
Principle: Faith is giving ourselves to God and then obeying Him.
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for
and certain of what we do not see.
This is what the ancients were commended for”
(Hebrews 11:1-2, NIV).

SERMON NOTES--THE COURAGE OF JOSEPH
Matthew 1:18-25
Pastor Charlie
December 10, 2006

THE COURAGE TO LIVE A MORALLY UPRIGHT LIFE
“…Joseph her husband was a righteous man…”

THE COURAGE TO GIVE GRACE TO OTHERS 1 Peter 4:8
“…did not want to expose her to pubic disgrace…”

THE COURAGE TO RESIST SOCIETAL PRESSURES
“…do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife…”

THE COURAGE TO OBEY GOD James 1:2; 1 Peter 2:20
“…he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him…”

Obeying God can result in being unfairly treated.
Obeying God does sometimes appear stupid.

“...go and make disciples of all nations…teach these disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always…”
(Matthew 28:19, 20, NLT).

“In the world you have tribulation, but take courage: I have overcome the world”
(John 16:33, NASV).

SERMON NOTES--The Hope of the Wise Men
Matthew 2:1-12
Pastor Charlie
December 3, 2006

The Magi were God-fearing Gentiles who were looking forward to the coming of the Jewish Messiah!
  • Christ-focused hope has a forward-looking perspective. Philippians 3:13; Romans 8:21, 23-25
God told the Magi and the world of the coming of the Messiah. Daniel 9:24-26
  • Christ-focused hope is grounded in God’s Revelation. Hebrews 1:1-2; 1 Corinthians 2:1-12; 2 Timothy 3:16
God used a supernatural star to start the Magi on their journey. Numbers 24:17
  • Christ-focused hope opens us to God’s supernatural activity in our lives. Ephesians 3:16-19
The hope of the Magi was strong enough to compel them to undertake a costly and difficult journey to find the King.
  • Christ-focused hope gives us a willingness to undertake costly endeavors. Luke 9:23; Romans 12:1
The Magi disturbed King Herod and all of Jerusalem.
  • Christ-focused hope sometimes upsets people and life. John 16:33; John 15:18, 20
Herod had to consult with the Jewish scholars to learn where the Christ was to be born and devised a plan to kill the newborn King. Micah 5:2
  • Christ-focused hope improves spiritual sight. 1 Corinthians 1:20, 22, 24; Colossians 3:16
The Magi were overcome with joy when they saw the star.
  • Christ-focused hope produces joy in life. John 15:9-11; 1 Peter 1:5, 6, 8, 9
The Magi worshipped Jesus.
  • Gold for His royalty
  • Frankincense for His deity
  • Myrrh for His humanity

Christ-focused hope prompts worship. Philippians 2:9-11; Revelation 5:12; 1 John 3:2; Titus 2:11-13

For those wanting to go deeper:

=============================
SUNDAY COLLEGIUM--What about that "thinking question"?

November 26, the Collegium discussed the "Thinking Question" (see above) and Andrew B's suggestion for what should happen "in here":

1. God is leading the mission. He is leading us on the mission by having put His Spirit in us. (I always find that amazing.) So we need to know how to be led by the Spirit. In here we can exercise experiencing that leading so out there we are more sure of how to follow.

2. Actually should be the first point, the mission is driven by love. We are going on the mission driven by love and bringing love. Inside we can practise that too, so we actually do it better outside.
The bottom line--which is still being clarified via email--focused on how to design the 9:15 am Sunday Worship Gathering to better include these two intentions: to practice following the Spirit and loving one another.

------------------

We are on a journey as fellow travelers.
Some of us have been journeying a long time and know more.
Others are new to the journey and have fresh eyes and fresh wonder.
Yet we are fellow travelers.
All have a voice.

“The Book of Life contains the names of all who have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ. The other books contain a detailed record of the works of the unsaved. No one who appears at this judgment is registered in the Book of Life. The fact that his name is missing condemns him, but the record of his evil works determines the degree of his punishment.” Bible Believers Commentary by William MacDonald

A Picture of Jesus:
In the Wedding, Jesus is the Groom.
In the Second Coming, Jesus is the Lord.
In the Millennium, Jesus is the King.
At the Great White Throne, Jesus is the Judge.

GOING DEEPER--What's coming in November?

Tuesday Gathering: November: A People of the Table
The Doctrine of the Trinity is confusing. How can God be one God and Three persons? Plus, even if we can get a hold on the idea of the Trinity, what does it have to do with following Jesus day after day? Starting in November, the Tuesday Gathering will be considering the amazing truth about relationship, following Jesus, and theology.

SUNDAY COLLEGIUM--Should Christians be environmentalists?

Scriptural Data

Genesis 1:28-31
And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Genesis 2:15
The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

1 Corinthians 4:1-2
This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.

Informing Opinion

BE A CHRISTIAN ENVIRONMENTALIST
By MARY BETH BONACCI

At last -- a way to be Christian and popular at the same time. By
protecting the environment, you can do good and still be politically
correct.

Hold on. Before you run off to get your Greenpeace card, let's take a
little closer look at this whole issue of environmental protection.
The environmental movement is probably one of the largest social
movements of the late 20th century. And, as the pope points out, it
is in many ways a very important movement. But we need to understand
why it's important and what should motivate us to protect the
environment.
[read the rest]
The Collegium concludes, as far as the editor recalls, that, yes, Christians should be environmentalists, but they need to be aware of their motivations and implementations. We should care for the environment to bring glory to God by living out our God given stewardship. In doing so, we must not compromise the welfare of humans, who are made in the image of God.

Wonder.
Think.

November 12, 2006
Pastor Charlie

The birth of this world’s system: Genesis 11:1-9 – The Tower of Babel

GOD’S DESCRIPTION OF BABYLON -THIS WORLDS SYSTEM Chapter 17
  • Its father is Satan (v. 3). Ephesians 6:12
‘a woman sitting on a scarlet beast’
  • Its focus is materialism (v. 4a).
‘dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls’

  • Its character is immorality (v. 4b). Jeremiah 51:7
‘she held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries’

  • Its business is prostitution (v. 5). Nahum 3:4; Ezekiel 16:15

  • To separate means to reject the worlds values, priorities, goals, wisdom, etc. Colossians 2:6, 8-10; 1 John 2:15-16; 1 Corinthians 3:18-19
  • God will bring swift judgment on Babylon – this world’s system (v. 9-10).

SERMON NOTES--Revelation 13

COUNTERFEITS
The Book of Revelation, part 7
October 22, 2006
Pastor Charlie

  • Prophetic Revelation: God clearly revealing what is going to happen
  • Prophetic Interpretation: Ideas on how God’s clear revelation may happen
  • Prophetic Speculation: Guessing the “what” or “how” of God’s unclear revelations.

THE BEAST OUT OF THE SEA 13:1-10

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Physical appearance (1-2): Daniel 7:17; Daniel 7:23-27

Insight: This beast is symbolic of both a government and a ruler.

Conduct (5-8):
* He blasphemies God.
* He wages war against the saints.
* He rules all the nations.

Insight: This beast is symbolic of the strongest political leader the world has ever known and he hates God and His followers.

WHO IS THIS BEAST?
* This beast is the government and emperors of Rome.
* The beast is any power and ruler in any age that sets itself up as anti-God in the world.
* The beast is the great final ruler of the world and the government from which he rules.

Insight: This beast seems to possess the complete package of evil rulers and governments of this world.

WHO IS THIS RULER?

Insight: No math magic will prove who he is, and we cannot know who he is with any clarity.

WHAT ABOUT THE SEVEN HEADS, TEN HORNS AND CROWNS?

Insight: possibly ten world leaders from seven nations

WHAT ABOUT THE WOUND TO THE HEAD?
* It is a picture of the weakness of this ruler or kingdom.
* It is a picture of a nation that falls and rises again.
* It is a picture of an individual that falls and rises to global power.

WHAT ABOUT THE 42 MONTHS?

The Jewish calendar was lunar and contained 30 days in each month.
So 42 months would be 1260 days, which would be 3-½ years of our calendar.

Different views of the 3½ years:
* The 3½-year period is just a number.
* The 3½-year period is symbolic of the time the church is persecuted.
* The 3½-year period is literal and means this exact period of time.

PEOPLE’S RESPONSE TO THE BEAST (v. 3, 4): John 3:19-20

Insight: Many people’s hearts are easily swayed away from God and toward Satan.

Summary: Daniel 12:9-10

Many pieces of God’s plan have been kept hidden, many people will turn to God and wickedness will continue until the end. There will be an increase of an anti-God and Christ passion near the end with a very strong ruler and government empowered by Satan.

The beast of the earth 13:11-18

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Physical appearance (v .11):)
* two horns like a lamb
* spoke like a dragon

2 Corinthians 11:14

Revelation 16:13 - a false prophet. Matthew 7:15; Matthew 24:24

Insight: The first beast is a political leader that rules through intimidation. The second beast is a spiritual leader that rules through deception.

Conduct (v. 12ff):
* Exercises political authority
* Exercises religious authority performing miraculous signs (v. 14, 15) Matthew 7:22-23
* Exercises economic control requiring everyone to receive the mark

What will this mark be?

Insight: You must choose to worship the beast to receive the mark of the beast.

Summary:

If they can control the political, religious and financial aspects of society, they have control over the people of the world.

THE COUNTERFEITS OF CHAPTER 13
* A counterfeit god
* A counterfeit resurrection
* A counterfeit worship
* A counterfeit ruler
* Counterfeit miracles
* A counterfeit mark

SERMON NOTES--Revelation 10-11

GOD’S WORD AND WITNESSES
The Book of Revelation, part 5
October 8, 2006
Pastor Charlie

The superiority of God’s word

Revelation 10

THE ANGEL (v.1)
“robed in a cloud” – God’s presence, Exodus 40:34-35
“a rainbow above his head” – God’s faithfulness
“face was like the sun” – God’s ?
“legs were like fiery pillars” – God’s guidance, Exodus 13:21-22
“he planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land” – God’s ownership, Psalm 95:5

This mighty angel from God reminds us that:
* God is a covenant God – keeping his promises, both of salvation and judgment
* God is a caring God – providing guidance, especially in dark times
* God is the all mighty God – owner, ruler of the universe

THE SECRET (v. 4-7) Deuteronomy 29:29

Principle: God has revealed to us all we need to know.
“there will be no more delay”
“the mystery of God will be accomplished”
“mystery” refers to a divine secret. Ephesians 3:6; Ephesians 1:9-10

Principle: God’s redemptive plan will be fulfilled through Christ alone. 2 Peter 3:9

GOD’S WORD (v. 8-9) Ezekiel 2:7-3:3; Psalm 119:103-104
* God’s word is sweet – it satisfies our souls. Psalm 19:10; Ephesians 2:8-9; Matthew 11:28-29; Isaiah 40:28-31; Galatians 5:22-23
* God’s word is bitter – it reveals the judgments of God. Romans 8:1-2
* God’s word is to be eaten – to be internalized, to be digested.

Ways to eat God’s word:
* Read the Bible.
* Study the Bible. 2 Timothy 2:15
* Meditate on Bible truths.
* Apply Bible truths to life. James 1:22-25

THE PERSEVERANCE OF GOD’S WITNESSES

Revelation 11

THE TEMPLE (v. 1-2)

Interpretations of Ezekiel’s vision of a new temple (Ezekiel 40-42):
1. The temple of Ezekiel’s vision should have been built in 520BC, but was not. So we are still waiting for fulfillment of this vision.
2. This temple will be built during the thousand year reign of Christ.
3. This is a symbolic temple – representing true worship of God by His church today
4. This is a symbolic temple – representing the future and eternal reign of God, when His presence and blessing fill the earth.

Interpretations of John’s vision (Revelation 11):
1. The temple is literal and the focus is on the Jews and their place in these final days.
2. The temple is symbolic and refers to the “true Israel,” the church, consisting of all believers in Christ.

Principle: God will re-build His temple, re-establish His kingdom, and once again live among His people.

THE TRAMPLING (v. 2)

THE WITNESSES (v. 3-12) Malachi 4:5-6

Principle: God provides a witness right up until the end to offer people a chance to receive His forgiveness and love and be rescued from His wrath and judgment.

THE SHOUT (v. 15-19) Romans 8:22-23; Daniel 2:44; Zachariah 14:9

Principle: God’s Kingdom will come.

Some lessons learned:
* God desires all to be saved. John 3:16
* God holds back judgment for the last one to repent. Ezekiel 18:32; 2 Peter 3:9
* We are to keep on witnessing even in the midst of strong opposition. Acts 4:19-20

Pastor Charlie

“When He opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven.”

THE ALTAR OF PRAYER (8:2-5) Luke 1:19; Psalm 141:2; Revelation 5:8-9

Types of “Tribulation”:
* The trials of everyday life;
* The Great Tribulation;
* The Day of the Lord.

THE SEVEN TRUMPETS (8:6-9:19)

Trumpet #1: destruction of a third of the earth’s vegetation (8:6-7) Exodus 9:23-26
Trumpet #2: destruction of a third of the sea (8:8-9) Exodus 7:20-21
Trumpet #3: destruction of the fresh water (8:10-11) Exodus 15:23-25
Trumpet #4: a third of the heavenly lights are turned off (8:12). Luke 21:25-26

Understanding Prophetic Studies
* Prophetic Revelation – God clearly revealing WHAT is going to happen
* Prophetic Interpretation – ideas on HOW the revelation may happen
* Prophetic Speculation – guessing the what or how of unclear revelations.

Trumpet #5: mankind is tortured (9:1-11). Exodus 10:12; Ephesians 6:12

Key Purposes of the Great Tribulation:
* To unmask Satan;
* To judge sin;
* To invite salvation. John 3:36

Trumpet #6: destruction of a third of the human race (9:13-19)

Who are these 200 million troops?

PEOPLE’S RESPONSES: (9:20-21)
* Rebelliously unrepentant;
* Religiously idolatrous;
* Morally decadent.

Trumpet #7: opens the 7 bowls of God’s wrath
