COLLEGIUM--Looking at the first week...
Well, we've completed a first run at 1 John 1:1-4. It was a bit of a rocky ride, being our first time out as an actual collegium. As we go along, we'll be emphasizing three things: holy worldliness, the process of studying the bible for ourselves, and what it means to be a collegium.
A collegium is a group whose members pursue shared goals while working within a framework of mutual trust and respect (Dictionary.com).
In the Sunday Collegium, mutual trust and respect means that each member...
- Listens
- Speaks
- Questions, and
- Comes prepared
- Responsible to share what we know
- Responsible to clarify what we do not understand
- Responsible to challenge what does not square up
- Responsible to look at process and work together to make the Collegium better
Parallel Prep Tracks:
- Track One: Read through 1 John over and over.
- Track Two: Lectio on the passage for the week, making notes on what God teaches and how he wants us to respond
Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading)
- Lectio--Reading, listening to the passage slowly, listening for the voice of God
- Meditatio--Meditation, thinking about the passage (like a cow chewing its cud)
- Oratio--Prayer, talking with God about the passage and how God wants us to respond
- Contemplatio--Contemplation, resting in God's presence
- Response--Record thoughts, questions, observations, odd notions, connections, and whatever else, using words, diagrams, drawings, movies, and whatever. Bring these responses to the Collegium.

THE GATHERING--Trust
Easy for some. Tough for others.
The college group worked at trust this past Tuesday. Results are mixed. This is normal. One thing the group tried was a trust fall/trust lean (see Trust Building Activities). Some of us apparently need baby steps.
Trust is a hard thing. The more your trust has been stomped on, the harder it becomes. Funny how this truth becomes so apparent when faced with something as simple as falling back into someone elses capable arms. What one thinks will be so easy becomes impossible. So what to do? Start smaller maybe? I know one thing that happened is light on the path ahead of us. We now know some things that need to be worked on: trust is one of them.
Shaena made a good call teaching this lesson. There's work to do, but now at least we have light. This is a very good thing.

SERMON NOTES--How To Manage Your Mouth
A LIFE TRANSFORMED BY FAITH
James 3:1-12
Pastor Charlie
April 30, 2006
"We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says,
he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check." (vs. 2)
WHY MANAGE OUR TONGUE
* WE NEED TO MANAGE OUR TONGUE BECAUSE OUR TONGUE DIRECTS WHERE WE GO (vs.3,4).
* WE NEED TO MANAGE OUR TONGUE BECAUSE OUR TONGUE CAN DESTROY WHAT WE HAVE (vs. 5-8). Proverbs 18:20; 21:23
* WE NEED TO MANAGE OUR TONGUE BECAUSE OUR TONGUE DISPLAYS WHO WE ARE (vs.9-12). Matthew 12:33,34; 15:16-20
The real problem – your heart
A person with a harsh tongue has an angry heart.
A person with a negative tongue has a fearful heart.
A person with an overactive tongue has an unsettled heart.
A person with a boasting tongue has an insecure heart.
A person with a filthy tongue has an impure heart.
A person who is critical all the time has a bitter heart.
THE ANSWER TO MANAGING OUR TONGUE
* GET A NEW HEART. Ezekiel 18:31; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 John 1:8, 9
The real solution – a new heart
A person who is always encouraging has a happy heart.
A person who speaks gently has a loving heart.
A person who speaks truthfully has an honest heart.
* ASK GOD FOR HELP EVERY DAY Psalm 141:3; Philippians 4:8
* THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK James 1:19
