SUNDAY GATHERING—Choose!
Sunday morning, Pastor Charlie talked about God’s purpose, passion, and power.
The sermon notes are below, if you need them.
Just to be clear
Purpose: why something is done; the reason behind an action or decision
Passion: (1) suffering; (2) intense, devoted love
Power: ability to accomplish what the will has decided to do.
Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ has stirred up lots of discussion. People are talking about Christianity and—more importantly—Jesus. Everywhere you look, there are opinions.
What are some of the opinions you’ve heard?
How are Christians responding? How are you responding?
Read John 10:11-18 looking for God’s purpose, passion, and power.
I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
“He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
“He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.
“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,
even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
“I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.
“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.
“No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
What does Jesus say here about God’s purpose, passion, and power?
How should we respond to the current discussions?
In his article, Surviving Postmodernism, Don Chaffer lays out two choices: participate in Christ or fold your arms and stand in the corner. Choose.
“The good news of Jesus Christ needs to be good news again. We can either choose to participate in the ever-new incarnational reality of the Christ (the physical presence He has promised to continue by the way of His blood), or fold our arms and stand in the corner along with the same group who held power the first time Christ came around. It’s our choice” From Surviving Postmodernism, by Don Chaffer. Read the article in the print version of Relevant Magazine, Jan/Feb 2004, pg. 19.
