SERMON NOTES—Our Core Beliefs

The truths we stand upon
Pastor Charlie
January 29, 2006

Key perspectives in our approach to beliefs:

  • Unity in our core beliefs
  • Diversity in our non-core beliefs
  • Respect towards everyone

CORE BELIEFS
  • God Is The Creator And Ruler Of The Universe. Genesis 1:1; Psalm 90:2; Daniel 4:34-35
  • Jesus Christ Is The Son Of God And The Only Savior For Humanity Philippians 2:6-8; Colossians 1:15-17; 1 Peter 2:24-25; Acts 1:3; 9-11; Acts 4:12

“You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or your can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” (C.S. Lewis)

The Holy Spirit Is God’s Presence in Every Believer’s Life.
  • The Holy Spirit works alongside God the Father and God the Son to fulfill the plan of God in our lives. 1 Peter 1:2; John 14:16-17; 1 Corinthians 2:12
  • The Holy Spirit lives in every Christian. Ephesians 1:13; 1 Corinthians 3:16
  • The Holy Spirit provides the Christian with power for living Acts 1:8
  • Christians seek to live under His control daily. Galatians 5:25

The Trinity?

The Bible Is God’s Written Word.
  • Unity – 66 books, written over a period of 1500 years with 40 different writers, yet consistent
  • Authority – over 2,000 times in the Old Testament it says: ‘This is what the Lord says” or “The word of the Lord came to…”
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21
  • Historical integrity and verifiability
  • Salvation Emphasis

People Are God’s Supreme Creation But Are Separated From God By Sin. Genesis 1:27; Romans 3:23; Romans 3:20; Matthew 5:21-22; 27-28
Sin means “missing the mark.”
Salvation Is God’s Free Gift To Every Person Who Receives Jesus Christ. Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 10:9
Salvation means “to rescue.”
Eternity Consist Of Living With God In Heaven Or Apart From God In Hell.
  • Heaven is used to refer to the material universe beyond earth.
  • Heaven is used to refer to the eternal dwelling place of God. Matthew 6:9-10
  • Hell is used to depict the final place of eternal punishment. Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10; 12; 15
  • Every person will face God’s judgment. Hebrews 9:27
  • Every person decides their eternal destiny. John 3:36

Summary
When God created human beings, He shared His own image and likeness with them. This gift makes each individual far too significant to live a brief, solitary life, and then cease to exist. Each human being will exist beyond his or her physical death, to find a destiny in eternity. The gift God gave man also brought with it personal responsibility. Man was given the capacity to choose, and with that capacity the possibility of making wrong, and even disastrous, choices. Sin brought mankind under God’s wrath, for justice demands that sin be punished. Yet human beings were too precious to God to be abandoned, so through Jesus’ suffering and death, God provided salvation for everyone who responds with faith to God’s offer of salvation; “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (John 3:18). God has acted, at great personal cost, to free every person from the threat of eternal punishment. Only refusal to respond to God’s revelation of Himself can now condemn an individual. The choice of each person’s destiny is his or hers alone.

SERMON NOTES—Our Purpose and Mission
Pastor Charlie
January 15, 2006

OUR PURPOSE: To Glorify And Enjoy God Foever By Loving Him With All That We Are.

WE WERE CREATED TO GLORIFY GOD. 1 Corinthians 10:31

  • We bring glory to God when we are fruitful. John 15:8; Galatians 5:22,23,25
  • We bring glory to God when we obey Christ. John 15:5, 10
  • We bring glory to God when we praise Him. Hebrews 13:15; Psalm 50:23

WE WERE CREATED FOR A LOVE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.
  • God created us to be loved by Him. Ephesians 1:4; John 3:16-17; 4:9,10
  • God created us for us to love Him. Mark 12:29-30

OUR MISSION: To Introduce People to Jesus and Bring Them into a Community Of Believers Who Are Helping Each Other Become Fully Devoted Followers of Christ. Matthew 28:18-20

“go” – literally as you are going
“make followers” – a command, not an option

The key meaning of disciple is to line up with the Master in belief and behavior. 2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 12:2
The key method of disciple-making is transformation through community. Acts 2:42-47

“baptize them” - a public statement identifying yourself with your Master

  • Submission – your new Master has absolute authority over you
  • Surrender – you will give up all you possess and all your plans to follow your Master
  • Identification – you are now known as a follower of your Master.

“teaching them to obey” – the mission is transformation of character and conduct, not the learning of information.

BARRIERS TO DISCIPLE-MAKING IN THE CHURCH TODAY:
  • Our lecture approach to teaching
  • Our spiritual individualism and surface approach to community

“Dear brothers and sisters, if another Christian is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path…. Share each others troubles and problems, and in this way obey the law of Christ”
(Galatians 6:1-2, NLT).

TUESDAY GATHERING—Revelation 14:6-18:24

Well, we've started the final run. Tuesday, January 3, we did a low flyover of 5 chapters. Here are some details notes:

REVELATION 14:6-13
The eternal good news is announced. One last call to repent and fear God, and then rejection makes the judgment complete. To drink of the beast's passion (thumos; 14:8) is to drink of God's wrath (thumos; 14:10). This is the law of retribution: what one gives to God, one receives from God. If one gives rejection, then one receives rejection. If one gives loyalty, then one receives loyalty. This truth gives the believer reason to endure by keeping God's commands and by remaining loyal to Christ (even when evil seeks to tempt and destroy).

REVELATION 14:14-20
Here continues the law of retribution from 14:6-19. Two harvests take place. The first (a harvest of 'wheat') is the ingathering of the people of God. The second (a harvest of grapes) is the judgment of the God-rejecters. God shows mercy towards his people and justice toward those who choose to reject him.

REVELATION 15:1-8
The expected response to plagues and wrath is sadness and/or distress. That is not not the case here. Verses 2-4 depict the celebratory praise of the people of God. God's worth is so clear that the people wonder "Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name?" (15:4a). To them it is inconceivable for anyone to reject God. This praise song puts in context the announcement of the seven angels with the seven plagues. They carry out the wrath of God and this is cause for celebration. With these seven plagues "the wrath of God is finished" (15:1).

REVELATION 16:1-21
In the book of Exodus, Moses reports how God used plagues--in sequence, one after the other--to judge the Egyptians and deliver his people. In Revelation, John reports how God will use plagues--cumulatively, one upon the other--to finalize judgment of his enemies and deliverance of his people. Here the wrath of God is poured out full strength and his enemies get drunk on it. Rather than repent, they curse God's name and in so doing prove his judgment to be just. In the middle of this the people of God are told to keep awake and ready, for no one knows the time.

REVELATION 17:1-18
In a show of sovereignty, God uses his enemies to accomplish his purposes. The prostitute--Babylon the Great (Rome, the world system)--serves the beast and the beast's vassal kings. God uses the beast and the kings to destroy the prostitute. Even when things seem out of control God is in control and his will shall be accomplished.

REVELATION 18:1-24
Surrounded by an inclusio of the heavenly perspective (vv. 1-8 and 21-24), the final judgment of Babylon is mourned by the kings, merchants, and sailing men who benefit from her immorality and luxury. It is worth noting that, while they mourn her, they also stand far off so they will not be caught up in her judgment.

Prep for January 10. Read Revelation 19-22.
