THE GATHERING--Celebration Sunday

There was no Sunday School today, but here's the wrap up daily prayer for the 40 Days of Purpose:

Since life is preparation for eternity, I want to use my time on earth fulfilling God's five purposes for me:

I was planned for God's pleasure (worship), so I will use this day to get to know and love God better.

I was formed for God's family (fellowship), so I will use this day to show love to other believers.

I was created to become like Christ (discipleship), so I will use this day to make choices that grow my character.

I was shaped to serve God (ministry), so I will use this day to serve God by serving others.

I was made for a mission (evangelism), so I will use this day to share the Good News.

In the coming months, we'll be looking at our specific purpose in YAM and as individuals. December 1 through 15, we will be looking at what the Old Testament had to say about the coming of Messiah AND we'll be putting together our own faith stories, to bring the Good News of Messiah to a starving world. Whether you are at TFB or away, you can participate. The complete bible study and faith story guide will be posted each week.

Next week we start off with God's promise to Abram in Genesis 12:1-3.

The Gathering--Week 6 of the 40 days of purpose

Evangelism: You were made for a mission

So, Jesus was teaching in this house in Galilee. The place is packed. People came from all over. The religious leaders (they didn't like Jesus too much) were there, too. Anyhow, there was a guy in the town who was paralyzed and lived his life on a mat. Some of his friends heard that Jesus was in town and knew that Jesus could heal their friend. They picked up his mat--he was probably protesting, but, hey, he was paralyzed-what could he do--anyway, they picked up the mat and carried him off to Jesus. One problem--the place was packed. There was no way to get their friend in. Hmmm. One of them was apparently clever--"I know, lets go on the roof, dig a hole in it and lower him down, right in front of Jesus!" The other guys probably rolled their eyes... but agreed. The crowd listening to Jesus heard the thump, thump on the roof. Then they heard the roof being torn up. (You gotta wonder what the owner was thinking... "Who's gonna fix that?") So they lowered the guy on ropes, right in front of Jesus... {see Luke 5:17-26 for the rest of the story]

What does this passage teach us about evangelism?
1- They became concerned for their hurting friend.
2- They believed Jesus would save their friend.
3- They didn't just pray for their friend; they brought him to Jesus.
4- They didn't let their difficulties discourage them.

Evangelism (which means 'good message') is just telling hurting the people in your world what Jesus has done for you. And guess what? You are the best one to tell your story. Big surprise, eh? Here's the keywords: compassion, faith, action, persistence. So. Who do you need to tell?

KNOW GOD--RESOURCES FOR WALKING THE WALK

welcome to 'the cube' [v.2]
an experiment in virtual worship

The worship cube developed out of a discussion on the ship of fools bulletin boards which focused on the nature of colour symbolisms in worship, and the emotions they evoke, along with a semi side discussion on randomness is worship, a group of us got together in cyber space and eventually developed the worship cube as an online [but you knew that already as you’re here!] worship resource.

Your route through the cube can be taken any way you like in the best of alt.worship traditions, whatever you feel comfortable doing, is ok by us.

A note on the colours themselves, each colour is designed to evoke an individual response rather than a corporate message, so hopefully no two people will have the same experience or take away the same message, that’s the intention anyway.

Check it out at The Cube.

Special Section--What's Necessary for success?

What do Americans believe is necessary for them to have lived a "successful" life? The options are surprisingly few. What we discovered is that success relates to the following:

· One-third said the health and well-being of their family, or how well they raised their children, would determine their success;
· One out of every four adults defines personal success in terms of tangible outcomes or accomplishments;
· One out of four adults has no idea what would signify that they had lived a successful life;
· Only one out of every fourteen adults said that anything related to spirituality or faith would result in "success."

FUNNY OR JUST PLAIN COOL--Gun-Totting Grandad Gets His Terrorist Squirrel

LONDON (Reuters) - A squirrel which terrorized a British town by attacking people has been shot and killed by the grandfather of its latest victim.

Geoff Horth, enraged by the squirrel biting his two-year-old grand-daughter Kelsi Morley on the face, took up his airgun and hunted down the rogue rodent, the Sun newspaper said on Friday.

The Gathering--Week 4 of the 40 days of purpose

Discipleship: You were created to become like Christ

Three tools God uses to make you like Jesus
1. The bible.
2. The Holy Spirit.
3. Circumstances.

Three choices that will help you become more like Jesus
1. You can choose what you think about.
2. You can choose to depend on God's Spirit moment by moment.
3. You can choose to respond to your circumstances the way Jesus would.

Prep for next week:
- continue to read a chapter a day in the Purpose Driven Life (days 22-28)
- Read John 13:1-17. What lessons about servanthood can you learn from this moving example from the life of Jesus?
- Read, reflect, and meditate on Philippians 2:3-4 this week.
- Read Luke 17:7-10. What does this passage reveal about our relationship to the master?

FUNNY OR JUST PLAIN COOL--Bed Forces Sleepyheads to Rise in Morning

NUREMBERG, Germany (Reuters) - A German schoolgirl has invented a "merciless bed" to ensure that sleepyheads get up in the morning.
The bed gradually raises the mattress after an alarm rings. After five minutes, the sleepyhead is rolled onto the floor.
"I constructed it myself," Iris Koser, 16, said at an exhibition of inventions this week.

CAMPUS NEWS--Sports Report--Christian Heritage versus Biola University women's volleyball game

Biola website: Biola and the Hawks battled back and forth in the first two games, but the Eagles capitalized on tremendous play in the middle to squeeze out two two-point victories. // GSAC Player of the Week Michelle Warkentin continued her outstanding play by hitting at a 36.7% clip with 13 kills and a game-leading five blocks. // But the story tonight was the play of sophomore Sarah Boogaard, who also hit just over 36% and had 15 kills and 15 digs to tie for the team lead in both categories. // Hannah Timboe also rebounded nicely from a sub-par week, tying Boogaard with 15 kills, while senior Amy Cole also tied Boogaard with a team-high 15 digs. // Emily Hethcock led the way for Christian Heritage. Game highs of 16 kills and 17 digs kept the Hawks close for most of the night. Sara Mooney also recorded double digits in digs for the Hawks with 14.

See Biola Volleyball website for the full story.

Laura's take: Well, personally, I know very little about volleyball. The last time I played I was elementary school (yes, back in the 60s!), so there will be no play by play from me. I will say this: I am impressed! Those women throw themselves all over the floor making plays that were just amazing to watch. Both teams played well and played hard. I have a new respect for volleyball players. Elementary school was never like this.

KNOW GOD--RESOURCES FOR WALKING THE WALK

Interview with Dallas Willard, professor of philosophy at USC, on his new book (Renovation of the Heart), brain-wave theory, pop-culture spirituality and the value of “thinking well.”

Here's a quote on his advice for twentysomethings...

Well, my heart really goes out to twentysomethings because of my own children and grandchildren and those I see in my classes every week. I dearly love them. And I guess what I would say [to them] is that there’s a great deal more to be learned about how to live now by how people have lived well in the past, than they can find from their educational institutions. So, they need to look independently, they need to act on their own to find out what are the resources for truly living well; particularly of the Christian church and its past.
