SUNDAY GATHERING—Choose!

Sunday morning, Pastor Charlie talked about God’s purpose, passion, and power.
The sermon notes are below, if you need them.

Just to be clear
Purpose: why something is done; the reason behind an action or decision

Passion: (1) suffering; (2) intense, devoted love

Power: ability to accomplish what the will has decided to do.

Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ has stirred up lots of discussion. People are talking about Christianity and—more importantly—Jesus. Everywhere you look, there are opinions.

What are some of the opinions you’ve heard?

How are Christians responding? How are you responding?

Read John 10:11-18 looking for God’s purpose, passion, and power.

I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
“He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
“He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.
“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,
even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
“I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.
“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.
“No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

What does Jesus say here about God’s purpose, passion, and power?

How should we respond to the current discussions?

In his article, Surviving Postmodernism, Don Chaffer lays out two choices: participate in Christ or fold your arms and stand in the corner. Choose.

“The good news of Jesus Christ needs to be good news again. We can either choose to participate in the ever-new incarnational reality of the Christ (the physical presence He has promised to continue by the way of His blood), or fold our arms and stand in the corner along with the same group who held power the first time Christ came around. It’s our choice” From Surviving Postmodernism, by Don Chaffer. Read the article in the print version of Relevant Magazine, Jan/Feb 2004, pg. 19.

LIFE TOGETHER: Prayer & Word

Psalm 145

Comments from Dr. Constable:
This acrostic psalm begins a series of six psalms, the last six in the Psalter, that are especially full of praise to God. The title, "a psalm of praise," occurs only here in the Book of Psalms. The word "praise" appears 46 times in the last six psalms. In this psalm David praised God for His powerful acts, for an everlasting kingdom, and for His response to those who pray to Him… This psalm is a great catalogue of reasons to praise God. Like the other acrostic psalms it is a model for us to use in recalling many of the things about God for which we should praise Him.

After spending some time reading Psalm 145, think over your life the past few weeks. Where have you seen God’s goodness. List them in your journal. Take some time to thank God, the go out and tell someone else where you have seen God’s goodness in your life.

NEXT SUNDAY GATHERING

“Ministry” 1a. The act of serving; ministration. b. One that serves as a means; an instrumentality. 2a. The profession, duties, and services of a minister. b. The Christian clergy. c. The period of service of a minister. 3a. A governmental department presided over by a minister. b. The building in which such a department is housed. c. The duties, functions, or term of a governmental minister. d. often Ministry Governmental ministers considered as a group. American Heritage Dictionary

OK, so according to the dictionary ministry is serving. But what does that mean in ordinary life? Is it serving on committees or some other sort of church work? Quick answer: Nope, not really.

Here’s a clue: Galatians 5:13-14 NASB
"For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'"

Next Sunday we’ll start working through the “how”

TFB: Sharing Our Hope

I Peter 3:15
Pastor Charlie

WE SHARE HOPE PROPERLY FOCUSED.
1 Peter 3:15

Hope is an optimistic outlook based on good promises from someone who can fulfill those promises.

Hope properly focused involves trust.
Who should you trust?
1. Someone known to be one who never breaks a promise
2. Someone who has the ability and resources to fulfill the promises
3. Someone whose promises have your best interests at heart
JESUS FITS THE BILL!!
*God works all things together for my good! Romans 8:28
*Nothing can ever come between me and God’s love for me! Romans 8:39
*God’s plan has my best interest at heart! Jeremiah 29:11
*God will never abandon me! Hebrews 13:5
*Jesus will return and bring me to heaven. John 14:3

Hope properly focused requires surrender.

WE SHARE REASONS PESONALLY APPLIED.

WE SHARE WITH GENTLENESS SINCERELY EXPRESSED.

Our hope gently and sincerely shared gives us integrity.
Our hope gently and sincerely shared draws people to God. 1 Peter 2:12

WE SHARE WITH CONFIDENCE FAITHFULLY MAINTAINED.

If Noah was guided by God, we can be guided by God.
If Noah didn't have to produce results, neither do we.
If Noah can handle the insults and the persecution, so can we.

Today we had a spontaneous question and answer session. Here are some of the questions and resources as you ponder the answers.

Should Christians keep the Sabbath?
The Command to Keep the Sabbath
Why do Christians worship on Sunday instead of the Sabbath?

What is prophecy?

Matthew Henry on 1 Corinthians 14: 1-2

How did they decide which books went into the Bible?
How we got our Bible

Evangelicals and the Canon of the New Testament

What does “visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments” (Exodus 20:5-7) mean? The verse makes it sound like God holds a grudge.
Israel’s Worship (Exodus 20:1-7)

Revelation 20:10,12,15

*Every person will face God’s judgment.
Hebrews 9:27

*Every person decides their eternal destiny.
John 3:36

Summary
When God created human beings, He shared His own image and likeness with us. This gift makes each individual far too significant to live a brief, solitary life, then simple cease to exist. Each human being will exist beyond his or her physical death, to find a destiny in eternity. The gift God gave man also brought with it personal responsibility. Man was given the capacity to choose, and with that capacity came the possibility of making wrong, and even disastrous, choices. Sin brought mankind under God’s wrath, for justice demands that sin be punished. Yet human beings were too precious to God to be abandoned, so through Jesus’ suffering and death, God provided salvation for everyone who responds with faith to God’s offer of salvation: “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (John 3:18). God has acted, at great personal cost, to free us from the threat of eternal punishment. Only refusal to respond to God’s revelation of Himself can now condemn an individual; the choice of each person’s destiny is his or hers alone.

LIFE TOGETHER: The Day Alone

“Let him who cannot be alone beware of community. He will only do harm to himself and to the community… But the reverse is also true: Let him who is not in community beware of being alone.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together, pg. 77

What exactly is “the day alone”?

Agree or Disagree?
1. It is important that I spend time alone with God.
2. The Bible teaches that I should spend some time every day in Bible study and prayer.
3. God expects me to spend time every day in Bible study and prayer.

What do you think?

The truth is spending time with God is important, BUT the Bible neither teaches nor commands a daily time of Bible study and prayer.

Fact one: Bible study can be a sin. Check out John 5:39-40. The Pharisees were great students of the Bible, but look what Jesus says to them. Does this mean that studying, reading, and memorizing the Bible are not important? NO! But Bible study is not some magic pill to holiness either.

Fact two: Prayer can be a sin. Look at Luke 18:9-14. What do you think of the Pharisee’s prayer? Good or a sin? Does this mean prayer is not important? Again, NO! But like Bible study, prayer is not a magic pill to holiness either.

So, what does the Bible say?

Fact three: The Bible teaches CONTINUAL meditation on the Bible. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, to meditate is “To reflect on; contemplate.” Read Psalm 1:2-3 and Joshua 1:8. Both of these passages teach that God-followers are to meditate on his Word day and night. We’re supposed to ponder, think about, contemplate, and ruminate on the Bible ALL THE TIME. First, this is way more than 15 to 30 minute quiet time—it means 24/7/365. Second, in order to think about the Bible all the time, we actually need to know what it says. That means really listening when the Bible is taught and—yes—reading it for ourselves.

Fact four: The Bible teaches CONTINUAL prayer. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and Philippians 4:6-7. These passages teach that we should pray ALL THE TIME for EVERYTHING. Again, this is way more than 15 to 30 minute quiet time—it means 24/7/365.

NEVERTHELESS, spending an intentional time alone with God is important; it’s needed for the relationship. In fact, that is our purpose: to glorify and enjoy God forever by loving him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Read Mark 12:28-34. When a Jewish leader asked Jesus about the greatest commandment, he said it is to Love God and Love our Neighbor. Here’s the bottom line:

God does not NEED us. At first this may sound like bad news, but it’s not. God does not need us, but he does WANT us. Did you get that? He wants US. Not our stuff, not our duty—US!

The other side of that coin, though, is that even if we don’t WANT God, we NEED him. We don’t need the warm fuzzies we get during that favorite worship song. We don’t need the sense of accomplishment of in-depth bible study. What we need—desperately need—is HIM.

So what? Take a look at Psalm 42:1-2
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so I long for you, O God.
I thirst for God, the living God.
When can I come and stand before him?

Do you long for God that way? Are you desperate for him? If not, that is the most important thing to pray: ‘God help me want you; I want to want you.’

“One who returns to the Christian family fellowship after fighting the battle of the day brings with him the blessing of his aloneness, but he himself receives anew the blessing of the fellowship. Blessed is he who is alone in the strength of the fellowship and blessed is he who keeps the fellowship in the strength of aloneness.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together, pg. 89

LIFE TOGETHER

THE DAY TOGETHER
In this chapter, Bonhoeffer talks about a day in the life of the Christian community. He spends most of the chapter talking about the Common Devotions (morning devotions) of the community. There are three basic ingredients:
SCRIPTURE READING
Psalms: we learn
what prayer means
what we should pray, and
how to pray as a fellowship.
Old Testament/New Testament
Read whole books, not just portions
We learn a bigger reality and our own history
SONG
Singing together is the voice of the church
It is NOT the voice of individuals, but of community
PRAYER
Have one pray for all
Focus on community needs

PUTTING IT IN ACTION
For the College Group, Sunday morning is our “Day Together.” I propose an experiment. For the next five months, let’s have different members take the responsibility of being worship leaders. Now, before you say, “But I don’t sing” or “I don’t play an instrument” realize that worship is NOT just music. Now that you’ve taken a breath, here’s the deal. The worship leader would plan and run Sunday Gathering, focusing on the three categories listed above: Scripture Reading, Prayer, Song (not necessarily in that order).

TRUE SPIRITUALITY?
Mark 1:1-20
Jesus proves himself faithful to God and shows Satan that despite circumstances, Jesus will not be beat, but will faithfully complete his mission to expand God’s Rule in the world.

The Rule of God—the Kingdom of God—is right here, today, now. Looking around at our world—our churches—it’s often tough to find. Are we missing something? Is there something about Jesus and his Kingdom that has been covered up by all the Jesus-Bible-Prayer stories we’ve all heard? On the other hand, sometimes we do get it.

Think about this:
Where do you see believers “getting the point” of the Rule of God?
Where do you see believers “missing the point” of the Rule of God?

This week we start at Mark 1:21, the story of Jesus’ first demon tromping.

Join us Tuesday at 8 pm in the College Room.

THE STORYLINE READING SCHEDULE

Read through the Storyline of Scripture in 2004.
This week’s reading:
Storyline: Genesis 35-41
Worship and Wisdom: Psalms 15-17

Here are a couple of options:
1. For those with lots of time, hunger, or both, read through all the passages.
2. For those with less time, skim the Storyline passage, pick one story to concentrate on and read that, then read the Worship and Wisdom passages during a personal time with God.
