STUDYING ROMANS WITH PASTOR CHARLIE

The Christian View of Life, Part 32
HOW TO BUILD UP OTHERS
or
HOW NOT TO CAUSE ANOTHER CHRISTIAN TO STUMBLE
Romans 14:13-15:13

RECOGNIZE THAT YOUR ACTIONS AFFECT OTHERS (v. 13).
My actions could cause other believers to stumble (v. 13).
My actions could cause other believers to be distressed (v. 15).
My actions could cause other believers to be destroyed (v. 15).

COMMIT YOURSELF TO BUILDING UP OTHERS (v. 13).
APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF EACH PERSON (v. 15).

KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT (v. 16).
Proverbs 6:16, 19
Titus 3:10, 11

LIMIT YOUR LIBERTY OUT OF LOVE FOR OTHERS (v. 20).
It is wrong when it violates a clear standard of the Bible.
It is wrong when I know to do good but don’t do it.
James 4:17
It is wrong when I am not sure if it is right, but I do it anyway (v. 23).
It is wrong when I cause a believer to go against their conscience.
1 Corinthians 8:9-12
1 Corinthians 10:23, 24
Galatians 5:13

KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF (v. 22).
Romans 12:18

MAINTAIN A CLEAR CONSCIENCE (v. 23).

PUT THE GOOD OF OTHERS BEFORE YOURSELF (15:1, 2).
Romans 15:5

=============================
HOW DO YOU NURTURE YOUR SOUL?

NURTURE
See the Discussion Blog for more.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO NURTURE YOUR SOUL?

Here are some suggestions from the Sunday Gathering:

Search the bible for a “verse of the day/week” and post it in a public place.
Practice giving and encourage others to give.
Pray.
Study the Bible or different topics.
Have a regular devotional time.
Spend time in nature.
Read Christian books—fiction or non-fiction.
Listen to the Radio and CDs.

WHY IS IT HARD TO FIT GOD INTO OUR SCHEDULE?

Nurturing your soul requires time.
Nurturing your soul requires focused thought.
Nurturing your soul requires effort.

WHY IS NURTURE IMPORTANT?

First, because Jesus is worth it.
Second, because we need it.
Third, because it’s our responsibility.
Fourth, because unchurched people expect us to be holy—and they’re right!

WANNA GOLD STAR???

This week’s memory verse is Colossians 3:16-17. Per Greg’s request, there will be a gold star for anyone who memorizes the verse by next Sunday, November 30, 2003.

16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

TANA’S TIDBITS

Dear Yam-
Well the year is drawing to an end. It's hard to believe that on Thursday it's Thanksgiving, and in one month it's Christmas. How the time goes. It has been an amazing year for me. As I am sure it has for all of you. I have never taken much value in one year, but how a person can change in one year is truly great. I came to Australia very scared. I really didn't know what to expect from the church, myself or God. This has been a very stretching year, but one that I will never forget. I have had to learn a new language, English takes on a whole new meaning, and a new way of life. I have made many new friends and learned that expressing my feelings is a very relieving experience. I will truly miss all the fun things that I have experienced over here. I mean, who would have thought I would visit the Great Barrier Reef, or dress as a preppy 70's girl. Many things have changed, from my wardrobe to my hair style, even to the way I look at life. I can't wait to see all of you over the Christmas season. It will be a true Christmas season. Ok, right now the weather is like Florida in May. You try getting into the Christmas spirit, when it's 80 degrees outside with a 60% humidity level. Trust me, Santa in heat is not right, but I must admit, very funny. So I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Holiday Season, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can when I get home.

Yours truly,
Tana Rice

The Christian View of Life, Part 31
ACCEPTING EACH OTHER
Romans 14:1-12

“Disputable” - a disputable matter is an issue on which the Bible neither gives a command nor forbids.

“Accept” – to welcome, to receive, to include

HOW TO ACCEPT PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE WITH ME

DO NOT DISCOUNT THEIR PERSONAL CONVICTIONS (v. 1).

DO NOT JUDGE THEM (v. .3).
1 Corinthians 8:1, 4, 7
Matthew 7:3-5

DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE THEM (v. 4).

WHY I MUST NOT JUDGE OTHERS ON DISPUTABLE ISSUES

GOD HAS ALREADY ACCEPTED THEM (v. 3).

IT IS NOT MY PLACE TO JUDGE (v. 4).

I DO NOT KNOW THEIR MOTIVES (v. 5, 6).

ONLY CHRIST HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE (v. 8, 9).

I AM ACCOUNTABLE ONLY FOR MYSELF (v. 10-12).
2 Corinthians 5:15

COLOSSIANS 3 WRAP-UP: SELF EVALUATION

Sunday we wrapped up Colossians 3 with a nifty picture (if I do say so myself :-), a dramatic group reading of “Dead to the World” by Officer Negative, singing (see Colossians 3:16), and a self evaluation. The picture might well end up on Laura’s Fotolog on Monday. The self-evaluation is below. If you did not receive a copy at The Gathering (Sunday School), please complete the evaluation and send back (or turn in, if you’re in town) the bottom portion.

SELF EVALUATION
Colossians 3:1-17

Complete the survey using the following codes:
1= Never, 2=Rarely, 3=Sometimes, 4=Mostly, 5=Always

Give each statement a score, then total the scores for each section.

Section I
I tend to want what God wants.
I tend to think about God and God’s stuff.
I feel safe in God’s care.
I’m excited about becoming more like Jesus.

Section II
My sexual desire is under God’s control.
When I’m tempted by sexual desire, I run to God for help.
I choose carefully when deciding what to watch or read.

Section III
I treat others with love and respect.
I tell the truth.
I live like the Christian I say I am.
I get to know people rather than assuming what they are like.

Section IV
My attitude is becoming more and more like Jesus.
I forgive others when they hurt me.
I don’t hold grudges.
I’m grateful for all the good things God has given me.

Section V
I spend regular time in God’s Word.
I’m excited about worshiping God.
I help other believers in their Christian walk.
I evaluate my life to see if it matches God’s Word.
I love God so much I can’t contain myself.

"Tear off" (copy and paste it into your email) the portion below and turn in (or email).

Some stuff I probably need to work on (list stuff):
_________________________________________

Some stuff I’d like to know more about (list stuff):
_________________________________________

Some stuff I’d like the College Group to do (list stuff):

PARABLE MORPHING

What are some normal, everyday activities in your life? What might these say about who God is, how he works or what he values? Construct a parable on one of these activities.

We started the process of parable morphing on November 11. Here’s some of our parables—very preliminary!

The Kingdom of Heaven is like going to work…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like lying in bed half asleep in the morning…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like taking the bus…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like pouring milk on a bowl of Kap’n Crunch…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like playing an electronic solitaire game…

Start your own parable, and then come morph with us on Tuesday nights at 8 pm, on the TFB campus.
Join us for Tuesday Big Rocks (8:00 at TFB) if you’d like to morph some stories.
