Tuesday Gathering: What's in your way?

Last Tuesday Teacher: Shaena

Philippians 1:12-17 esv
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.

  • Do the people you work with, play with, go to school with, and live with know that you are a Christian?
  • What kind of picture are they getting of God from your life and your words?
  • Are you standing up and speaking up?
  • What's getting in the way of your standing up and speaking up?

Thanks to Shaena for laying down the challenge!

Homosexuality – What the Bible Says, Part 1
Pastor Charlie
March 26, 2006
One’s view of God’s Word – the Bible

Some Key Principles:
  1. Innate and Choice
    • The argument goes: if something is natural, then it must be from God.
    • Genesis 3 tells us that when Adam and Eve sinned humanity's relationship with God was blocked, humanity's nature changed to a sin nature, and the physical world started to fall apart. Because of this...
    • Natural is not necessarily good because our hardwiring has badness in it.
    • Human desires are not all good.
    • Each person is held accountable for their desires and their actions.
    • Standards are determined by God's holiness not human ability.

OPINION—Faith is not a warm fuzzy feeling
by tangentrider

Faith consists of both content and practice. It is ALWAYS both. The source of this content is the Bible (OT/NT). The source is not theology books. It is not pastors. It is not Sunday school teachers. It is not deep thoughts that may or may not pop into one's head while thinking about God. Truth may come from these places, but the source is the Bible. That being the case, ALL statements MUST be checked against scripture--no matter who makes the statement.

Faith itself has NO real power. It's like the wire connecting the lamp to the wall--in fact it's like the wires in the wall and over the street and across the state. The wires may carry electricity, but they are not the source of the electricity. The power is from the power plant. No connection. No power. Faith is like that. It's just a wire--a wonderfully designed, special wire, but just a wire. The real power of faith ALWAYS comes from the object of faith. If the object of faith has real power then faith has real power; otherwise the power is false.

Our prayers are answered not merely because we pray them but because the God who hears them is powerful and gracious. Yes, God answers silly "where in the world are my keys?" prayers, but sometimes his answer is, "I'm not going to tell you this time. Find them yourself and then figure out how not to lose them." I've had that answer to such a prayer. I don't lose my keys anymore. Funny that.

How To Win Over Temptation
Pastor Charlie
March 5, 2006

HOW CAN I WIN OVER TEMPTATION?

1. BE REALISTIC (vs.13a). I Corinthians 10:13; Hebrews 4:15
"when tempted ... "

2. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY (vs. 13b).

3. GET READY (vs. 14-16). Matthew 26:41; Ephesians 6:11-12; 2 Corinthians 2:11

HOW TEMPTATION WORKS (vs. 14-15):

Step #1 ~ You give attention to your evil desires.
Step #2 ~ You deceive yourself.
Step #3 ~ You choose to disobey.
Step #4 ~ You feed your disease of death.

4. REFOCUS (vs. 17). Philippians 4:8
