TANGENTRIDER BLOG--We are in this thing together

2 Timothy 1:6-7
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Tangentriders Paraphrase

Because of who you are--a person of sincere faith--do the thing that you already know to do. God has given you skills, passion, and calling, but right now, they are like embers. Do your part. Put in the tender and the kindling and fan those embers into flames. You are a part of this partnership. God gives the gift, more mature God-followers recognize the gift, and then you put in effort and bring the gift to its proper and effective use.

We are in this together. You must not be afraid to do what God has called and gifted you to do. God has given us fear. God has given us power--the capacity to act. He has given us love--the decision to act for the good of the other. He has given us self-control--the decision to place desires under Gods command.

This is who we are. We are in this together and we can only become who we are by doing our part together.

There are people in our lives who have shown us what it looks like to follow God. In fact, one of the most important ways we learn about God and his ways is by observing people and thinking about the meaning of their lives. Sometimes we remember an entire story in one name (ancestors 1:3). Other times, we must be more deliberate and make intentional connections (Lois and Eunice 1:5). Still other times, we are our own role models--this happens when someone reminds us who we truly are and challenges us to continue becoming that (2 Timothy).

I challenge you to consider the God-followers who have gone before you. Set out to learn what their lives are teaching. I also challenge you to be the sort of God-follower that others can look to and learn what it looks like to follow God.

Next week the freshmen join the college group. They will become part of the we who are in this thing together. To help that process, we will be doing some things to help us learn who we are and how God has gifted us.

It is time for us all to step up and do what God has called us to do.

Holy Worldliness: God-centered moral and spiritual excellence that understands the times and how to respond and live appropriately

Thoughts from the Lectio Divina
  • The command to love is both old and new.
  • It is difficult to love others
  • Loving our Christian brothers and sisters means we will not cause them to stumble.
  • Others can show us the behaviors involved in real love.
  • Love is action, not a warm, fuzzy feeling.
  • Because the true light is already shining, we are able to choose to love, even though it is difficult.
Project Options (Beginning July 9, we'll be thinking about how holy worldliness applies in our church.
  • TFB Program Evaluation
  • TFB Calendar Evaluation

TANGENTRIDER BLOG--Stumbling After God

I am a ponderer. This means that sometimesmost timesthings take a while to sink in and work out. A week and a half ago I drank from a verbal fire hose called Contemplative Youth Ministry (by Mark Yaconelli). Nearly every page held an Aha!, a Yes!, or a Dang It!

Mark wrote some things that shed light in dim places of ministry practicelike how it looks to bring yourself, in process, to the ministry before the students. His description was nearly revelational.

He wrote some things that confirmed random notions in my soullike the notion that we bring everything we areintellectual, emotional, and practicalto ministry. His suggestion for meetings (the Circle of Trustmore on that later) was spot on worshipful and respectful of the work to be done.

Finally, he wrote some things that smacked me so hard my ears are still ringinglike the lengthy and passionate discussion of the need for the minister to place herself before God and let her students see her in process.

So, what does this all mean for tfbcollege? Honestly, Im not sure yet. Im still pondering. But I have begun stumbling after God. This means that sometimes the Tuesday Gathering will be mostly stumble. Know this: I have committed my self and a weekly portion of my time to bringing the stumbling before God and listening for his evaluation. The stumbling will, I hope, become less frequent.

Another implication for tfbcollege is a challenge to the students: I ask you who walk this road with me to walk this road with me in a practical way. As we walk together, I may stumble. I may step on toes. I will need to hear the voice of God through you. An important way to do that is make the 7:15 Tuesday prayer time a priority. We all need to hear his voice together as we stumble after God.

James 5:1-6

THE WRONG USES OF WEALTH -- AVOID THESE!

Issue #1 -- The Accumulation Of Wealth (V. 2, 3).
Principle: Do Not Hoard Wealth.
Principle: Whatever You Accumulate Will Deteriorate.

Issue #2 -- The Appropriation Of Wealth (V. 4)
Principle: Do Not Gain Wealth By Dishonest Means.

Issue #3 -- The Allocation Of Wealth (V. 5)
Principle: Do Not Waste Your Wealth.

Issue #4 -- The Application Of Wealth (V. 6)
Principle: Do Not Abuse Money’s Influence.

THE RIGHT USES OF WEALTH -- PRACTICE THESE!

* RIGHT ACCUMULATION: SAVE WITH A PLAN FOR USE. Proverbs 21:20; 30:24

To develop the habit of saving you need to…
* Live on a margin.
* Learn to be content.

Valid Reasons for saving:
* Saving money prevents us from impulse buying. Proverbs 21:20
* Saving money allows us to be able to help other people when they have a need.
* Saving money gets it working for you rather than you working for your money.

* RIGHT APPROPRIATION: THROUGH HARD WORK. Proverbs 11:16; 12:27; 13:11; 14:23;

You can make as much money as possible as long as…
* It does not hurt your own health. Proverbs 23:4

* It does not hurt other people. Proverbs 16:8; 20:21
* As long as you grow as much spiritually as you do financially. 3 John 2

TANGENTRIDER BLOG--God's Treasured Possession

Exodus 19:5-6
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

At the first Pentecost, with the people shaking in fear at the foot of Sinai, God gave his people Torah--the instructions by which they might become who they truly are: Gods treasured possession. Nearly 1,500 years later at Pentecost, with the people gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem, God gave the Spirit--himself present in the soul of each and among them all that they--we--might become who we truly are: a people for his own possession.

When we gather, feasting on the Word and engaging the Spirit, we are becoming who we truly are: Gods treasured possession, a people of his very own. Our Tuesday Gatherings will change in the coming weeks and months, if we are attentive and rest in his presence.

I ask you to join me: feast on his Word daily, come pray weekly (Tuesdays at 7:15 pm), and speak what God tells you.

TANGENTRIDER BLOG--Faith as Practice

I wrote on faith back on March 2. There I said, Faith consists of both content and practice. It is time to unpack the notion of proper practice. What does that mean?

While there is a lot of variety in different faith communities, I think there are a few core practices. In First Corinthians 11:23-26, Paul gives the Corinthian church instructions concerning the Lords Supper. There he says that in taking the cup and the bread we proclaim Jesus death until he comes again. In Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus connects baptism with disciple making. It seems baptism somehow connects the person with God (Father, Son, and Spirit) and with the faith community. This connection is the beginning of discipleship.

Another command in Matthew 28 is to teach disciples to follow Jesus teaching. Another important passage is Acts 2:42. There Luke, the writer of Acts, describes the practice of the church in Jerusalem: they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. First, they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching. One practice of the church is learning the content. Second, they devoted themselves to fellowship. This is being together in the presence of God. Sometimes such gatherings are serious. Sometimes they are a hoot. Most often they are somewhere in between. Third, they devoted themselves to the breaking of bread. This is most likely the Lords Supper, mentioned above. Fourth, they devoted themselves to the prayers. In first century Judaism, this meant gathering daily for regular times of prayer.

Therefore, proper practice includes, at least, the Lords Supper, baptism, learning biblical content, getting together, and regular prayer.

How are we doing?
