I DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING FOR CHRISTMAS

Admittedly, 6 am was too early to start out. I mean, the work didn’t begin until 9. But is was my first time and I was unsure of distances. So, there I was, 6 am, waiting for a bus. By 6:30, I was ordering my morning vente blackeye, handing the Starbucks card over with one hand, while holding a jalapeno bagel (toasted with butter) in the other hand. It was an odd way to start the day, given the task. Around 7:30 I headed for the Douglas Greenline station. Just twenty minutes later, I was tramping down the steps at Rosa Parks station. The Blueline train was packed, but I lucked out and found a seat. Glancing up at the map, I saw Slauson was the stop before Vernon. I’d be there early, but I figured they could put me to work.

When the train arrived at Vernon station, I headed north up Long Beach Ave toward 41st. Just a few feet into the trek I realized my destination was on the opposite side of the tracks. Bummer. No problem. I kept walking. The building was a warehouse in a low to lower-middle income neighborhood—a mixed bag, for sure. The warehouse was the smaller than I thought, but the two semis parked out front told me that they meant business. On the front was the logo-style name: Los Angeles Food Bank . As I approached the Food Bank, I saw the security guard in the small parking lot. She greeted me cheerfully and led me up the stairs to the work area. We entered a large room, filled with pallets of canned and boxed food. Ten people were already at work preparing the packs for the volunteers that would arrive at 9. They put a box of Corn Flakes in a large plastic handle bag, then placed two bags in each red bin. The bins were labeled "#6"--this is the packet we were preparing today. #6 includes stuff like canned meat, cereal, canned vegetables, dry milk, canned milk, dry beans, and peanut butter. I was put to work unstacking the empty bins so the others could place the cereal in them. We worked furiously for about 30 minutes, prepping 673 bins.

When the others arrived at 9 am, Tony came and gave us our instructions. Teams of four to five people were assigned to each product. Some unsealed the boxes, others placed the cans or boxes into the bags in the red bins. An additional four were assigned to the cleanup team. This was my team. Out tasks were to breakdown the corrugated boxes and place them in a large box and to pick up any trash. The basic task was to keep the place safe and clean in order to prevent injury. Once the assembly line got going, it was a sight to see. In two hours we had packed and palleted all 673 red bins. Tony then had a group of people prep 152 more bins--this time canned peas instead of canned corn. We started up the line again around 10:40 and finished all the bins by 11:30.

These 825 food packs are delivered to 35 senior citizen homes throughout Los Angeles, providing basic nutrition to seniors on fixed incomes. What amazed me most is how such a small effort (we were only there about four hours) could do so much. Each pack supplies a month of basic food. Pretty amazing.

After taking a few pictures (to be uploaded later at Laurasmind: The Fotolog), I headed for Vernon station and lunch. I realized a few things at the LA Food Bank. First, it doesn't actually take that much time and effort to make a difference. It was only four hours. Second, it wasn't the "life-changing event" I expected. It was basic. It was good, but not some panacea--not some instant cure-all. It was good, basic physical labor aimed at a good cause--feeding people. Third, I can do this--even when I have homework to do. I was back near home by 12:30. The excuses are gone, and I gave myself a fairly cool Christmas present. Not bad for a half days work.

I'll definitely go again. You can join me. Sign up online at Volunteermatch. By the way, if you're away at school, Volunteermatch has information on volunteer opportunities in many cities, including Santa Barbara (CA), San Luis Obispo (CA), Stanford (CA), Waco (TX), and Portland (OR). Decide to do something, and then do it. If you're doing something already, share a story by sending an email to tfbyam1@hotmail.com.

WHEN GOD MESSES UP YOUR PLANS
Christmas Sunday, December 21
Pastor Charlie

GOD WANTS YOUR ATTENTION
Proverbs 16:25

Most of us have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) when it comes to hearing God. There is a way to treat Spiritual ADD. ONE: read the bible regularly and often. TWO: talk with others about what you're learning.

GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW HE HAS A GREAT PLAN FOR YOU
Jeremiah 29:11

God's plan for your life is always bigger than your plan because He has a bigger perspective.

God's plan for your life will sometimes be difficult and confusing.

God's plan for your life is always rewarding

1 Corinthians 2:9

Life will have trouble, that's a given. But in the middle of it all, God wants to give you satisfaction and significance. If you're regularly fatigued, frustrated, and fearful, you may want to give yourself a Spiritual ADD check up. It may be that he's been talking and your mind has been otherwise engaged.

GOD WANTS YOU TO TRUST HIM
Hebrews 11:6

STUDYING ROMANS WITH PASTOR CHARLIE

The Christian View of Life, part 33
KEYS TO AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY
Romans 15:14-33

Major theme divisions in the book of Romans:

Sin: Why do I need Christ in my life? Why do I need to be Saved? 1:18-3:20

Salvation: How can I be saved? 3:21-5

Sanctification: How do I grow up after I’m a Christian? 6-8

Sovereignty: God’s sovereign work in salvation and how Israel’s fits into that work: 9-11

Service: What do I do after I’m saved? 12:1-15:13
KEYS TO AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY

AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY IS BASED ON GOD’S GRACE (v.14-15)
John 15:16

AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY IS BUILT ON GOD’S WORD (v.16)
Acts 20:32
Romans 1:16,17
2 Timothy 3:16,17

AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY IS OPERATED FOR GOD’S GLORY (v.17-18)

AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY IS PERFORMED IN GOD’S POWER (v.19)
John 15:5
Zachariah 4:6

AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY IS PLANNED ACCORDING TO GOD’S PURPOSES (v.20).

PROVERBS ON PLANNING FROM THE LIVING BIBLE:
"We should make our plans counting on God to direct us." Proverbs 16:9

"We can make plans but the final outcome is in God's hands." Proverbs 16:1

"Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense ,and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts." Proverbs 24:3,4

"A wise man thinks ahead, a fool doesn't and even brags about it." Proverbs 13:16

"A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences." Proverbs 22:3

"A sensible man watches for problems ahead and prepares to meet them. The simpleton never looks and suffers the consequences." Proverbs 27:12

"A wise man is cautious and avoids danger. A fool plunges ahead with great confidence." Proverbs 14:16

"It is dangerous and sinful to rush into the unknown." Proverbs 19:2

"The wise man looks ahead. The fool attempts to fool himself and won't face facts."
Proverbs 14:8

PROVERBS ON DECISION MAKING FROM THE LIVING BIBLE

"What a shame, yes, how stupid to decide before knowing the facts." Proverbs 18:13

"We toss the coin but it is the Lord who controls the decision." Proverbs 16:33

"It is pleasant to see plans develop, that's why fools refuse to give them up even when they're wrong." Proverbs 13:19

AN EFFECTIVE MINISTRY IS SUPPORTED BY GOD’S PEOPLE
Supported financially by generous giving (v.25)
Supported spiritually by faithful praying (v.30)

THE GOOD NEWS ACCORDING TO ROMANS

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (3:23)

“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (5:8).

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (6:23)

“If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (10:9).

HOW DO YOU NURTURE YOUR SOUL?

See the Discussion Blog http://tfbyam.blogspot.com for more.

Is it important to nurture your faith? Why?

How do you nurture your faith? Here are a few ways we thought of today:
Pray often
Witness/lifestyle
Help thy neighbor
Christian music/worship/shows
Outreach
Accountability
Set a "God alarm' on your watch
Potluck
Bible study
Look at pretty stuff

Quick Scripture study (to nurture our souls):

Matthew 21:23-32

Authority Challenged, verses 23-27

Parable of Two Sons, verses 28-32

Closing:
John 8:31-33

Once you’ve thought about some ways to nurture your soul, work on developing discipline to make it a regular part of your life.

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

As with virtually anything in life, whether it be a garden, our bodies, relationships with friends and family, our spiritual relationship with God, it requires desire and effort on our part. The more worthwhile the enterprise, the greater our desire and effort should be.

NEXT WEEK: Nurturing our Faith (Souls) continues, read Ephesians 6:10-20.
Read with passion!

The Christian View of Life, Part 32
HOW TO BUILD UP OTHERS
or
HOW NOT TO CAUSE ANOTHER CHRISTIAN TO STUMBLE
Romans 14:13-15:13

RECOGNIZE THAT YOUR ACTIONS AFFECT OTHERS (v. 13).
My actions could cause other believers to stumble (v. 13).
My actions could cause other believers to be distressed (v. 15).
My actions could cause other believers to be destroyed (v. 15).

COMMIT YOURSELF TO BUILDING UP OTHERS (v. 13).
APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF EACH PERSON (v. 15).

KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT (v. 16).
Proverbs 6:16, 19
Titus 3:10, 11

LIMIT YOUR LIBERTY OUT OF LOVE FOR OTHERS (v. 20).
It is wrong when it violates a clear standard of the Bible.
It is wrong when I know to do good but don’t do it.
James 4:17
It is wrong when I am not sure if it is right, but I do it anyway (v. 23).
It is wrong when I cause a believer to go against their conscience.
1 Corinthians 8:9-12
1 Corinthians 10:23, 24
Galatians 5:13

KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF (v. 22).
Romans 12:18

MAINTAIN A CLEAR CONSCIENCE (v. 23).

PUT THE GOOD OF OTHERS BEFORE YOURSELF (15:1, 2).
Romans 15:5

HOW DO YOU NURTURE YOUR SOUL?

NURTURE
See the Discussion Blog for more.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO NURTURE YOUR SOUL?

Here are some suggestions from the Sunday Gathering:

Search the bible for a “verse of the day/week” and post it in a public place.
Practice giving and encourage others to give.
Pray.
Study the Bible or different topics.
Have a regular devotional time.
Spend time in nature.
Read Christian books—fiction or non-fiction.
Listen to the Radio and CDs.

WHY IS IT HARD TO FIT GOD INTO OUR SCHEDULE?

Nurturing your soul requires time.
Nurturing your soul requires focused thought.
Nurturing your soul requires effort.

WHY IS NURTURE IMPORTANT?

First, because Jesus is worth it.
Second, because we need it.
Third, because it’s our responsibility.
Fourth, because unchurched people expect us to be holy—and they’re right!

WANNA GOLD STAR???

This week’s memory verse is Colossians 3:16-17. Per Greg’s request, there will be a gold star for anyone who memorizes the verse by next Sunday, November 30, 2003.

16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

TANA’S TIDBITS

Dear Yam-
Well the year is drawing to an end. It's hard to believe that on Thursday it's Thanksgiving, and in one month it's Christmas. How the time goes. It has been an amazing year for me. As I am sure it has for all of you. I have never taken much value in one year, but how a person can change in one year is truly great. I came to Australia very scared. I really didn't know what to expect from the church, myself or God. This has been a very stretching year, but one that I will never forget. I have had to learn a new language, English takes on a whole new meaning, and a new way of life. I have made many new friends and learned that expressing my feelings is a very relieving experience. I will truly miss all the fun things that I have experienced over here. I mean, who would have thought I would visit the Great Barrier Reef, or dress as a preppy 70's girl. Many things have changed, from my wardrobe to my hair style, even to the way I look at life. I can't wait to see all of you over the Christmas season. It will be a true Christmas season. Ok, right now the weather is like Florida in May. You try getting into the Christmas spirit, when it's 80 degrees outside with a 60% humidity level. Trust me, Santa in heat is not right, but I must admit, very funny. So I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Holiday Season, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can when I get home.

Yours truly,
Tana Rice

ACCEPTING EACH OTHER
Romans 14:1-12

“Disputable” - a disputable matter is an issue on which the Bible neither gives a command nor forbids.

“Accept” – to welcome, to receive, to include

HOW TO ACCEPT PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE WITH ME

DO NOT DISCOUNT THEIR PERSONAL CONVICTIONS (v. 1).

DO NOT JUDGE THEM (v. .3).
1 Corinthians 8:1, 4, 7
Matthew 7:3-5

DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE THEM (v. 4).

WHY I MUST NOT JUDGE OTHERS ON DISPUTABLE ISSUES

GOD HAS ALREADY ACCEPTED THEM (v. 3).

IT IS NOT MY PLACE TO JUDGE (v. 4).

I DO NOT KNOW THEIR MOTIVES (v. 5, 6).

ONLY CHRIST HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE (v. 8, 9).

I AM ACCOUNTABLE ONLY FOR MYSELF (v. 10-12).
2 Corinthians 5:15

COLOSSIANS 3 WRAP-UP: SELF EVALUATION

Sunday we wrapped up Colossians 3 with a nifty picture (if I do say so myself :-), a dramatic group reading of “Dead to the World” by Officer Negative, singing (see Colossians 3:16), and a self evaluation. The picture might well end up on Laura’s Fotolog on Monday. The self-evaluation is below. If you did not receive a copy at The Gathering (Sunday School), please complete the evaluation and send back (or turn in, if you’re in town) the bottom portion.

SELF EVALUATION
Colossians 3:1-17

Complete the survey using the following codes:
1= Never, 2=Rarely, 3=Sometimes, 4=Mostly, 5=Always

Give each statement a score, then total the scores for each section.

Section I
I tend to want what God wants.
I tend to think about God and God’s stuff.
I feel safe in God’s care.

Section II
My sexual desire is under God’s control.
When I’m tempted by sexual desire, I run to God for help.
I choose carefully when deciding what to watch or read.

I treat others with love and respect.
I tell the truth.
I live like the Christian I say I am.
I get to know people rather than assuming what they are like.

Section IV
My attitude is becoming more and more like Jesus.

PARABLE MORPHING

What are some normal, everyday activities in your life? What might these say about who God is, how he works or what he values? Construct a parable on one of these activities.

We started the process of parable morphing on November 11. Here’s some of our parables—very preliminary!

The Kingdom of Heaven is like going to work…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like lying in bed half asleep in the morning…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like taking the bus…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like pouring milk on a bowl of Kap’n Crunch…
The Kingdom of Heaven is like playing an electronic solitaire game…

Start your own parable, and then come morph with us on Tuesday nights at 8 pm, on the TFB campus.
Join us for Tuesday Big Rocks (8:00 at TFB) if you’d like to morph some stories.

The Gathering… What not to wear, Part Four: Colossians 3:5-8

Last week we answered the questions: who are Christ-followers and where are they going? According to Colossians 3:1-4, Christ-followers died with Christ—their old, self-reliant, rebellious self is dead—and were raised with Christ—they have brand new life and this new life is hidden—is kept absolutely safe—with Christ in God. Where are Christ-followers going? In the process of heading toward glory (v. 4) Chris-followers’ desire and mind is tending toward above things—Jesus’ stuff—rather than toward earthy things. This means Christ-followers not only want Jesus’ stuff, they also intentionally think about Jesus’ stuff.

Since Chris-followers have these two tendencies, God commands them to kill—yes, kill—their earthy sexuality and to take off/set aside the earthy way that they get along with others. Killing their earthy sexuality and the earthy way that they get along with others proves—to themselves and to others—that they are no longer under God’s wrath. Frankly, when Christ-followers wear earthy sexuality or earthy ways of getting along, they are not being whom they are.

So, what is earthy sexuality? Verse 5 lists five things:
Immorality—this is unlawful sexual intercourse, which in biblical terms, is sex outside of heterosexual, monogamous marriage.
Impurity—this is even wider perversion—just think Calvin Klein ads and the show Sex in the City, and you’ll probably get an idea of what stuff Christ-followers are supposed to kill in themselves.
Passion—this is uncontrollable desire; now, at first, desires are small and controllable—or so it seems; what happens, though, is the longer we dwell on the desire, the more uncontrollable it becomes. This one’s sneaky.
Evil Desire—this is an illicit craving… nuff said.
Greed—it seems odd for this to be in a list with earthy sexuality, but as someone said Sunday, greed is about filling your own needs/wants and not caring about the needs/wants of others and that is the nature of earthy sexuality. Earthy sexuality is about pleasing yourself. Earthy sexuality is basically worshipping yourself and your own pleasure, rather than God.

Now on to earthy ways to get along. Verse 8 lists five:
Anger—this is chronic smoldering hatred. Hatred is defined as “Intense animosity or hostility.”
Wrath—this is an acute outburst; it is usually over quickly, but the damage done to others often lasts much longer that the wrath. The bible says that God’s wrath is against all ungodliness and unrighteousness (Romans 1:18-19). Wrath itself isn’t necessarily bad, but for humans, it is often much too difficult to tell a just cause from an unjust cause.
Malice—this is what lies below anger and wrath. The American Heritage Dictionary defines malice as “A desire to harm others or to see others suffer; extreme ill will or spite.” Malice is the tendency of desire and mind that leads to unjust anger and wrath.
Slander—this is railing or evil speaking against another person.
Abusive speech—this is shameful or abrasive speech; shameful speech is “talking dirty.” Abusive speech tears others down.

So, look back over the definitions. How does our culture’s view of sex and sexual desire compare with God’s? How does our culture’s view of getting along with others compare with God’s? Our culture says that any sex is ok as long as it does not hurt someone. Our culture says that it’s important to take care of our needs and if someone else gets their feelings hurt, it’s a bummer, but oh well.

Christ-followers are not to be like that. For Christ-followers all of life points to Jesus. Our culture, like the culture of the Colossians, has a lot to say that does not match what God says and does not fit who Chris-followers really are. Start exercising your soul towards Christlikeness.

Paul’s letter to the Colossians talks a lot about Christ and Christ-followers. If you’re wondering how to get your desire and your mind to tend towards Christ and Christ’s stuff, do the “Going Deeper.” The best thing you can do to be more like Jesus is to hang out with Jesus.

Going Deeper
Continue reading through the letter to the Colossians, reading about a paragraph each day. After you read, spend a few minutes talking with God about what you’ve read. You may want to keep a journal of your discoveries and questions.

Culture Assignment:
As you live your life this week, look around for ethnic, social, and status division/diversity. Also, think about tolerance, diversity, division, and prejudice. What is good? What is not good? Why?

Tuesday Bible Study-- The Kingdom of Heaven is like… [this is a work in progress]

Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

What’s the parable? Wheat and tares left growing together until harvest, despite the fact that tares are bad for wheat…

What in the world are “tares”? Well it’s bearded darnel… Now doesn’t that just clear it all up?

Just one reason to have a bible dictionary handy when you’re looking at the bible—especially parables. The point of a parable hinges on correct understanding of the story. So what are “tares”? It’s variety of ryegrass (also known as bearded darnel) that looks a whole lot like wheat until the grain begins to show; it also happens to carry a fungus that is poisonous).

Armed with this handy information, give verses 24-30 a good read—before looking at verses 36-43—and try to figure out what Jesus is saying about the Kingdom, the King, and/or the Kingdom inhabitants. Then see what Jesus had to say about the parable of the wheat and tares in verses 36-43.

After you’ve studied the parable and Jesus’ interpretation, work on the DIA (define-identify-apply). Add what you’ve discovered to the list we came up with Tuesday night.

Define
“an ordered area with a main lord—God—who rules over everything”

Identify
KINGDOM
involves reward
revealed to hear-ers and see-ers
hidden from everyone else
is integrated/mixed on earth

KING
merciful
wise
in control
has an enemy attempting to harm the inhabitants of his kingdom and the king

KINGDOM INHABITANTS
children of righteousness
planted by God
cared for by God

Apply
producing fruit among non-believers (kingdom evidence)
what we do show who we are—works are an expression of our relationship to God

If you have stuff to add, feel free to put your findings in the comments on the bible study blog. By the way, whether or not you attend YAM Tuesday Bible Study, feel free to add your comments!

NUGGETS FROM THE SDGs
[more is available at http://tfbyam.blogspot.com/]

The Gathering… What not to wear, Part Three: Be who you are

Christ-followers are to have two tendencies. The first tendency is a tendency of the desire. The second tendency is a tendency of the mind. A Christ-follower’s desire and mind are to tend towards Christ and Christ’s stuff. These two tendencies are a natural consequence of being raised from the dead with Christ (see also Colossians 2:20-23). The active cause of these two tendencies is the Christ-follower’s dying and entrusting their very life to Christ—in other words, Christ is the cause of true spirituality!! The end result—guaranteed!—of these two tendencies is that when, at the end of history, Christ is revealed in glory, Christ-followers will be right there with him.

So here is the question: Since we died and our life is kept safe with Christ in God… Since we rose from the dead with Christ… Since we really are headed for glory with Christ… what is it that draws our desire and our mind away from being who we really are?

The Colossians were being drawn away by their culture. Their religious culture told them that true spirituality required special knowledge or special rituals. Their social culture told them that whatever they wanted to do was ok. Their culture—both religious and social—drew them away from simply following Jesus.

What draws your desire away from Jesus?
What draws your mind away from Jesus?

Spend some time with Jesus, talking about the following passages:
1 John 3:1-2
Romans 12:1-2
Philippians 4:6-7

What can you do to start tending your desire and your mind towards Jesus?

Going Deeper
Continue reading through the letter to the Colossians, reading about a paragraph each day. After you read, spend a few minutes talking with God about what you’ve read. You may want to keep a journal of your discoveries and questions.

Culture Assignment:
Sexuality is a huge influence in our society. This week, take note of the influences in your world. How do you think the culture uses sexuality?

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY-- The Kingdom of Heaven is like…

October 14, we started looking at the Kingdom parables of the Gospel According to Matthew. Over the next couple of months we will be working on a DIA of the Kingdom of Heaven. What’s a DIA? Glad you asked. Back when I was in college—many moons ago—I had a discipleship leader who taught us DIA: Define, Identify, Apply. It’s a good way to get a handle on ideas.

Define: this is basically a dictionary style definition. It is the range of meaning for the concept regardless of context.

Identify: these are the identifying characteristics of the concept. How do you know it when you see it?

Apply: this is how the concept looks in real life. It answers the question, Yeah, but how do I do that?

So, let’s start building our DIA of the Kingdom of Heaven (hereafter called KOH for short). First, let’s take a look at where we’ve been the past couple months—Genesis 1-11. What can you learn about God’s original plan from Genesis 1-11. Tuesday we came up with a few things: God’s original plan involved grace, scattering, vengeance, cause-effect, and humans designed to subdue and to rule. Further, it appears that the plan was sabotaged. Did God sabotage his own plan? Did humans sabotage the plan? Did Satan sabotage the plan? Or is it some combination?

Next, let’s look a parables and why Jesus used them. Spend some time studying Matthew 13:10-17, 34-35. According to the passage, why did Jesus use parables? What does this tell you about the nature of the KOH?

Here’s what we came up with so far:

Define: the KOH is “an ordered area with a main Lord who rules over everything.”
Identify: clues so far include rewards, revealed to see-ers and hear-ers, and hidden from everyone else.
Apply: nothing yet

If you have stuff to add, feel free to put your findings in the comments.

The Gathering… What not to wear, Part Two

Why did you choose the clothes you’re wearing right now? It may be that they were the only clean clothes, or that they fit, but somewhere down there, you are wearing these clothes because they fit your style. They fit who you are. This is a picture of the very issue Paul talks about in Colossians 3:1-17—since we are spiritual, what does it take to be truly spiritual?

Read thru the section and, as you read each paragraph, search for clues to answer the question: What does it take to be truly spiritual?

3:1-4
3:5-8
3:9-11
3:12-15
3:16-17

Now, take a look at the clues you found. How would you answer that question?
Have you ever known anyone who was truly spiritual? What is it about that person that shows you they are truly spiritual?

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY-- The Kingdom of Heaven is like… (starting this week)

Tuesday, October 7, we joined Pastor Charlie, Pastor Rog, and Bob Frueholtz (sp?) to talk about the new Mission-Vision-Values document the church leadership is working on. There was a good discussion. Yammies included Jonathan P, Danny S, Jon G, and Laura Sp. If you haven't read the document and had your say, there is still time. Pick up a copy, then send an email to Pastor Charlie. Afterall, the church is all of us together!

God is expanding his kingdom, but what, exactly, is his kingdom? October 14 we start a new series looking at the Kingdom parables in Matthew’s gospel. Prepare by looking up “kingdom of God” and kingdom of heaven” in a concordance (you can use http://www.biblegateway.com), skimming though some of the passages, and defining “kingdom”—you might want to check the American Heritage Dictionary too

If you were to ask your friends, “What does it take to be truly spiritual?” how do you think they would answer? How would you answer?

Today we started our study of Colossians 3:1-17. Today we took a whirlwind tour through Paul’s letter to the Colossians. In this letter, he answers the question, “What does it take to be truly spiritual?”

The letter to the Colossians was written to a small church in a very small, unimportant town. The church was planted—most likely—by Epaphras after he hear Paul preach in Ephesus, some 100 miles away. Colossae was located on a major East-West trade route and had been the largest town in the area. At the time this letter was written—AD 61-62—it had decreased significantly in both size and importance. Epaphras was very concerned about this church plant, because empty philosophy and legalistic religious practices were infiltrating the congregation. The Colossians were being drawn away from Jesus and his grace. Epaphras made the very long trip to Rome, where Paul was under house arrest, to get Paul’s help in dealing with this dangerous situation. Paul’s letter to the Colossians is the result of Epaphras’ trip.

There are two key points in the letter. First, Jesus is absolutely, without any doubt, God Almighty, Ruler of all, Creator of all, Lord of all. He is the boss of everything. Second, real spirituality comes from the believer’s intimate connection with Jesus, not from empty philosophy or legalistic religious practices.

Take a few minutes to review Colossians 1:15-20; 2:8-12; 2:18-19; and 4:5-6. What do these passages teach about Jesus? What do they teach about Christianity?

How do you think Paul would answer the question, “What does it take to be truly spiritual?”

Next week we’ll preview Colossians 3:1-17. This passage deals with Christian life day by day. It deals with our relationships with each other and with God.

Going Deeper
Start reading through the letter to the Colossians, reading about a paragraph each day. After you read, spend a few minutes talking with God about what you’ve read. You may want to keep a journal of your discoveries and questions.

Even Deeper…
Read through Colossians 3:1-17 three times, using a bible with paragraph divisions.
Write a headline/title for each paragraph.

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY-- The book of Beginnings: Genesis 1-11

September 30, we took a mad dash through Genesis 1-11, topping it off with a discussion of Genesis 12:1-3, the call of Abram

Here’s the flight plan…

The structure of Genesis:
1:1-2:3 …God created
2:4-4:26 The story of the heavens and the earth
5:1-6:8 The story of Adam
6:9-9:29 The story of Noah
10:1-11:9 The story of the sons of Noah
11:10-26 The story of Shem
11:27-25:11 The story of Terah (we stopped at 12:3)

Skim through these stories and look for clues to answer the following questions:
- What sort of person is God?
- What does God value?
- What is God’s purpose—his project?

Now read Genesis 12:1-3. How does God’s calling Abram fit into what God is doing? Note especially verse three—the last line is a preshadowing of the Messiah Jesus, the one who blesses people from every tribe and nation (see Revelation 7:9-10)

Unlike the 'essay test' version, this one is more like short answer. Since we are already in October, let me know ASAP. Please answer all three questions.

1. Are you interested in serving on YAM leadership (commitment is three months--oct-dec--with an opportunity to renew)

2. Why?

3. When should we meet? (answer: NO, AM, NOON, PM) --we'll probably meet formally once a month and informally whenever--but this can change if the leadership decides.

TANA’S TRIPS--Hello Sunny America!

It has been a long time since I have written. Months actually. I have really enjoyed my time downunder. I only am here another 2 1/2 months, so I really have to make the most of it! Since October is right here, I am already going into my second month of spring, Aussies switch seasons on the 1st of the month. I have already had some really hot weather, around 90, with a humidity of 73.

I have had to change my walking route to church because the magpie birds attack humans during their nesting season, and boy do they attack! I was walking along, minding my own business, which is pretty easy to do when you have 40 mins to walk, when out of nowhere this bird flies down, and swoops right past my ear. So close I could hear the 'wind beneath its wings,' to quote Mariah Carrey. Then, it turns around and does the same thing again. Now, at this point, I am getting a bit mad. I turn around, look that bird straight in the eye, for by this point it had laned on the ground behind me, and asked it if it wanted to get beat. I kept right on walking, backwards mind you, and told that bird that if it did that again, I would catch in my jacket and shake it up like a shake-n-bake chicken. Needless to say, it stopped attacking me, that time. But from then on out, I decided it might be wiser for me to walk a different way. Who wants the reputation of the walking backwards, sweating like a pig, talking to a bird girl? Not me.

School and church have been going well. I really enjoy what I am learning about the entertainment industry. I even get to go see a taping of Wheel of Fortune. It may not sound that interesting, but for a girl who barely gets out of a 5km area, its going to be exciting. I was able to fly up to Queensland and see Daniel and Allison Felton last week. That was great fun. They live right across the street from the beach, but I never got that far. We spent too much time talking.

Well, I best get going. I have been busy all day, have to be at church at 7:15 tomorrow morning, and have a party I must prepare for. Hope you are all doing well and can't wait to see many of you over the Christmas break.

Sincerely yours,
Tana Rice

WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL—Colossians 1:15-17

15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before God made anything at all and is supreme over all creation. 16 Christ is the one through whom God created everything in heaven and earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see—kings, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities. Everything has been created through him and for him. 17 He existed before everything else began, and he holds all creation together.

Think about the different ways Jesus is portrayed. Check out the beliefnet.com “Jesus” page for some ideas.

The Gathering… Leading a Bible Study Part III
Led by Jonathan Pribble

This week we discussed the third and final chapter of the “Leading a Bible Study” study. The topic this week was preparation for leading and the actual leading of a Bible Discussion group. The first step in preparing to lead a Bible study is to determine a set of objectives and write an outline based on these objectives. The objectives and outline provide guidance for the discussion and allow for the evaluation of progress while discussing.

The next step in preparation is to develop discussion questions to provoke further thought. Observational questions ask what the passage says outright. Interpretational questions ask what the passage means. Correlation questions ask how individual verses in the passage are interrelated. Application questions are the ultimate goal of Bible study and ask how the passage’s truths can be used in day-to-day life. Application questions should be asked often throughout the study.

Finally, it will be time to actually lead the study. When leading a discussion, the lesson plan should be used to guide the discussion but it is not necessary to stick to it verbatim if a relevant question is brought up. If, however, a tangential question is mentioned, it is best to save discussion for after the main objectives have been met. It’s best to use the question cycle for each section rather than a large chunk of scripture. Questions should be thought provoking and should only have one part. When the study is finished, the chapter should be summarized and the main points highlighted. Close in prayer and preview the next week with a question or homework.

This week’s homework is to read Colossians, then write headlines for the paragraphs in Colossians 3:1-17.

- Jonathan Pribble

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY-- The book of Beginnings: Genesis 1-11

September 23, we looked at Genesis 10-11 (focusing on 11:1-9).

Observation: What it says.
- Chapter 10 is another fascinating genealogy, this time with a few stories mixed in—which is the reason we need to at least skim the genealogies: we might miss something! In this case the first Nimrod, the beginnings of the Canaanite nations, and a blurb about Peleg (read 10:25 and ask yourself what it means by “in his time the earth was divided”).
- Genesis 11:1-9 is about the famous tower of Babel. “Babel” means “gate of god” in Assyrian and “confusion” in Hebrew. Read the story to find out why.
- Verses 1-9 have an idea sandwich; the same phrase/idea is at the beginning, middle, and end of the paragraph (see verses 10:32; 11:1; 11:9). This is an excellent clue to the point of the passage.
- Read through verses 1-9, and notice the characters and the plot.

Interpretation: What it means.
- Why do you think God has such an issue with them staying at Babel?

Correlation: How if fits.
- Read Genesis 1:28; 9:1, 7, 19; Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8
- Describe God's valuing of scattering and variety.

Application: Our response.
- What might God's valuing of scattering and variety imply for the way we do ministry?
- For the way we live our lives?

Spend some time talking with God about how he wants you to respond to his Word.

September 30 we’ll look at Genesis 11:10-12:3 (focusing on 12:1-3 The Call of Abram—Read up)

WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL

Colossians 3:12-14

12Since God chose you to be the holy people whom he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13You must make allowance for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are all called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Last week we looked at what not to wear. This week, we look at what to wear. The believer’s new wardrobe is made up of stuff we develop from hanging out with Jesus. This new set of clothes equips us to live with fellow believers, even when they’re not being “nice,” the clothes help us to be mature—complete—in our faith, and the clothes help us to have Jesus’ peace as the arbitrator in our hearts.

How is your relationship with you fellow believers? Do have some unfinished conflicts that you just can’t seem to leave behind? Maybe they’re valid conflicts. People really do hurt us and they really do wrong things. So, how can we set these conflicts down and leave them down? Paul says the answer is being who we are. Putting on the clothes that really are ours.

Spend a few minutes taking an attitude inventory. Talk with Jesus about your attitude and about the stuff you’re having trouble putting down. Remember, he loves you more than you realize and he is the one who gives you that new wardrobe.

The Gathering… Leading a Bible Study Part I: Studying the Bible
Led by Jonathan Pribble

Today we looked at a passage study using Acts 17:10-15.

There are four steps:
1. Where and when is the passage set?
2. What is the context?
3. Who is involved?
4. What nearby passages are relevant?
5. What’s the moral of the story? What’s the point?

Here are some resources:
1. Commentary
2. Concordance
3. The Internet (check the YAM website for some useful links)
4. The Word itself (here’s where a regular habit of bible reading comes in. The more you read, the more the Spirit can bring relevant passages to mind.)

TUESDAY COMMUNAL DISCOVERY-- The book of Beginnings: Genesis 1-11

September 16, we looked at Genesis 9 (focusing on 9:8-29).

Observation: What it says.
- There are two stories in this passage. The first (9:9-17), deals with the covenant God made with humans and all creatures.
- The second story (9:18-29), deals with a very strange incident.
- Some historical stuff: Shem is the father of the Semites (that’s basically Hebrews and Arabs). Japheth is the father of the Indo-Europeans (that’s your basic white folk, basically, but not really white). Ham is the father of the Cushites, Egyptians, and Canaanites (yes, the Canaanites, into whose land the wandering Hebrews—the original audience of Genesis—were preparing to enter… hmmmm).

Interpretation: What it means.
- Read over the passage again.
- What do these stories tell you about God? What do these stories tell you about God’s dealings with people? What does it tell you about the direction of God’s plan?
- Think about Ham’s behavior and Noah’s reaction. Why might Noah announce a curse on Ham’s son, Canaan, rather than on Ham? On the face of it, this seems a bit unfair. Look a bit further. What do we learn about Ham’s character from his behavior towards his father? What kind of man is he? What kind of father is he? If the curse is made by Noah—if his speaking the curse causes the curse—this is unfair. On the other hand, if Noah is simply announcing the logical result of Ham’s flawed character, then the curse makes sense.

Application: Our response.
- During their wandering, the Hebrews following Moses made the choice not to enter the land because they were afraid of the people (Numbers 13). The result? Wandering in the wilderness for forty years.
- During the wandering, Moses disobeyed God by striking the rock instead of talking to it as God had commanded (Numbers 20). The result? Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised Land.
- Ham lived a life that tended away from God. The result? His entire family tended away from God and, in the end, the Canaanites were condemned by God (Deuteronomy 20).
- How do you go about making moral choices? Do you look only to today and how good something will feel? Whether it is choosing whether to drink or what major to take, take the long look. Every choice has consequences.

Spend some time talking with God about how he wants you to respond to his Word.

Next week we’ll look at Genesis 10:1-11:9 (focusing on 11:1-9 The Tower of Babel—Read up)

Get a headstart. Spend one of your personal worship times reading over Genesis 10:1-11:9.

YAM SERVICE TEAM—Applications due September 21

YAM Service Team Applications have been delivered. Applications are due Sunday, September 21, 2003. If you are interested in serving on the team, either in YAM or elsewhere in TFB, be sure to fill out an application.

In his letter to the Ephesian believers, Paul reminded them that the ministry happens in the members:

“He [Jesus] is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ, until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 NLT

In other words, it is the job of every believer to be part of a community and to use their gift(s) to help make the community more like Jesus. How can you use your gifts to make YAM more like Jesus?

WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL

Colossians 3:5-11

(5)So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual sin, impurity, lust, and shameful desires. Don't be greedy for the good things of this life, for that is idolatry. (6)God's terrible anger will come upon those who do such things. (7)You used to do them when your life was still part of this world. (8)But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. (9)Don't lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds.

(10)In its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within you. (11)In this new life, it doesn't matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.

This passage reminds me of The Learning Channel show “What Not to Wear”. Verses 5-9 is like the first part of the show, where Wayne and Stacey come out and tell the person all the things they should not wear. Verses 10-11 are like the second part of the show when the “victim” gets the wardrobe rules.

Get out a piece of paper. Make two columns. Label the first column, “what not to wear” and label the second column “wardrobe rules.” Now, read through the passage and fill in the columns.

Think about your daily life—what you put into your soul via the media, how you act, what you dwell on. Which column do you live in most of the time? The “what not to wear” column or the “wardrobe rules” column.

Spend a few minutes talking to God about your list.

GOD'S PURPOSE FOR MY LIFE
Romans 8:28-31

GOD’S PROMISE IS TO USE EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT CULMINATES IN WHAT IS BEST FOR ME. (v.28)

This verse does NOT say:
“All things are good”.
“All things work out the way I want them to”.
“All things have a happy ending here on earth.

Genesis 42: 36 versus Genesis 45:5

GOD’S PURPOSE IS TO COMPLETELY CHANGE ME INTO CHRIST-LIKENESS. (v.29)
Genesis 1:26,27

Primary tools God uses to change me:

1. God uses the Bible

John 17:17
2 Corinthians 3:18

2. God uses my circumstances.

James 1:2-4
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

GOD’S PROCESS OF CHANGE STARTS AND ENDS WITH HIM. (v.29,30)

Foreknowledge: God knew all about you in advance and committed Himself to you.
Predestination: God decided in advance to change you into Christ-likeness.

Philippians 1:6

Called: God invites you to be saved.
Justified: God declares you legally guiltless – just-as-if-I’d never sinned.
Glorified: God completely and permanently transforms you into His image.

1 John 3:2

MY RESPONSE IS AN ATTITUDE OF CONFIDENCE IN GOD. (v.31)

1. Trust God with my life and future.
2. Submit to God’s plan and will.
3. Choose Contentment.

1 Timothy 6:6-8

4. Express thankfulness and praise to God.
5. Adopt a teachable spirit.

“And now, all glory to God, who is able to keep you (me) from stumbling, and who will bring you (me) into his glorious presence innocent of sin and with great joy. All glory to him, who alone is God our (my) Savior, through Jesus Christ our (my) Lord. Yes, glory, majesty, power, and authority belong to him. In the beginning, now, and forevermore. Amen. Tuesday Communal Discovery… September 9 we looked at Genesis 8-9, focusing on 8:20-9:7.

Observation: What it says.

- First, some context. What happens before this passage? Look at 8:1-20. What happens after this passage? Read the rest of chapter 9. It’s a doozie.
- The narrative. The story in this passage is simple. Noah builds an altar and offers sacrifice (8:20). God smells the aroma of the sacrifice and makes a decision (8:21). After making this decision, God blesses Noah and his sons, and speaks to them (9:1).
- The dialogue. This is not simple. There are two bits of dialogue: 8:21b-22 and 9:1b-7. The bit of dialogue in chapter 8 contains the content of God’s decision. The bit in chapter 9 contains the content of God’s blessing. Spend a few minutes reading these two bits of dialogue.

Interpretation: What it means.

- God’s response to Noah’s sacrifice is similar to God’s response to Noah’s righteousness in 6:1-7. In chapter 6, God had decided to wipe out everything on the earth, but Noah found favor, resulting in God’s saving Noah, Noah’s family, and every kind of animal. Here God smells Noah’s sacrifice—he sees Noah’s “godwardness” and decides that he will not destroy the earth again, even though humanity remains intent on godlessness.
- The continuing existence of natural systems gives evidence that God is sticking by his decision not to destroy the earth.
- God’s blessing of Noah and his sons contains both responsibility and provision.

Application: Our response.

1) God’s favor toward even one person can greatly affect the world around that person.
2) God is faithful to his decisions.
3) God expects his people to live out the blessing—to fill the earth with God-fearing community and to respect life, especially human life.

Spend some time talking with God about how he wants you to respond to his Word.

Next week we’ll look at Genesis 9 (focusing on verses 8-29)

Get a headstart. Spend one of your personal worship times reading over Genesis 9.
