BIBLE STUDY METHODS--Writing a Big Idea Sentence

What is a big idea sentence? Dr. Alan Hultberg, of Talbot School of Theology, explains (click on Writing Big Idea Sentences for detailed instructions):

A "Big Idea" sentence is a simple sentence (i.e., a sentence with one subject and one predicate) that summarizes the main thought or theme or point of a paragraph.
Here are the basic steps:

  • Write the grammatical subject of the sentence by answering the question: What is this passage about? This part of the sentence should have no finite verbs (in fact, it is wise to stay away from verbs entirely if possible).
  • Write the predicate of a Big Idea sentence by asking, "What does the passage say about [insert the subject you had formulated in the first step]?"
  • Here is a sample of a big idea sentence for John 3:16-21: "The necessary trust in the unique given-as-Savior Son of God ...results in endless life and no condemnation and reveals the true nature of human works." Before teaching the passage, you will want to translate the sentence into normal English. For example: "Trusting Jesus is the only way to live without fear and without end."
Big Idea Sentences are a good way to get a handle on the important points of a passage. They force you to think about the text and sift out the big idea.

SERMON NOTES--Revelation 6-7

THE BEGINNING OF THE END
The Book of Revelation, part 3
September 24, 2006
Pastor Charlie

Key Questions

Question #1: Do these seven seals and bowls and trumpets happen all at the same time or do they happen one after the other?

Question #2: When does the rapture of God’s people, the church, take place in all of this?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The word rapture means “to be caught up.”
* Pre-tribulation view - the rapture takes place before the tribulation begins.
* Mid-tribulation view - the rapture takes place in the middle of the tribulation.
* Post-tribulation view - the rapture takes place after the tribulation.

Reasons for the pre-tribulation view:
* The rapture will be totally unexpected.
* Scripture teaches that believers will be protected from God’s wrath.1 Thessalonians 1:10 (See Romans 5:9 & 1 Thessalonians 5:9); Revelation 6:17
* It appears as if the Christians that experience the great tribulation were saved during the tribulation period and not before.
* The church is never mentioned after chapter 3 in Revelation.

Words of Caution:
*Do not adopt the pre-tribulation view based on the idea that God would never allow you as His child to suffer through such horrible things. 1 Peter 2:20-21
*Maintain a humble approach to your understanding of end time events.

REVELATION 6

The Seven Seals Opened
Seal #1: The White Horse - the antichrist (v.1-2)
Seal #2: The Red Horse - war (v.3-5) Matthew 24:6
Seal # 3: The Black Horse - famine (v. 5-6)
Seal # 4: The Pale Horse - death 2 Corinthians 5:8
“hades” – the place for all unbelievers waiting for final judgment
Seal #5: The Martyrs – how long? (v. 9-11) 2 Peter 3:8-9
What altar? Either the altar of sacrifice or the altar of incense
Seal #6: The Earth Convulses (v.12-14) Luke 21:1; Joel 2:30,31; Zephaniah 1:15; Isaiah 13:9,10

Three Types of Signs from God:
Type #1: The End is Coming – early warning signs Mark 13:5-8
Type #2: The End is Right Around the Corner – getting close signs
Type #3: The End is Now – you have arrived signs

REVELATION 7

Three Groups:
Group #1: Four angels – a pause from harming the earth (v.1-3)
Group #2: The 144,000 Jews – sealed from harm by God (v. 4-8) Revelation 14
Group #3: Those saved during the great tribulation - in heaven worshipping (v. 9-17)

BIBLE STUDY METHODS--The Syntactical Display

What is a syntactical diagram? Dr. Alan Hultberg, of Talbot School of Theology, explains (click on Syntactical Diagramming for detailed instructions):

Syntactical diagramming involves isolating each clause (and long modifying phrase) in a passage and indenting to show the relations among them. It is a means to help discover the basic propositions that make up the argument in a passage. It is much more useful in didactic or discursive literature (like epistles) than in narrative.

Here are some basic steps for doing a syntactical diagram in English [note: This process can be VERY complex, but it need not be. The instructions below are for a simply display. Even a simple display can help you get a handle on the flow of thought.]:

Syntactical displays are a good way to observe the text in biblical letters and other teaching literature. Give it a try--and do not worry, it is a learning process. Bring your display to Sunday Collegium or Tuesday Gathering to share and discuss with fellow collegians and/or tangentrider.

TANGENTRIDER BLOG--Honor Amidst Dispute

DSCF19151
Now, in a great house there are not only gold and silver dishes, but also wooden and baked clay, and some on the one hand to honor and some on the other hand to dishonor. If, then, anyone cleanse himself from these things, he will be a dish to honor, only having been set apart, useful to the household master, having been made ready for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:20-21 springer

2 Timothy 2:20-26

Conflict happens for we are human, do not see clearly, and often trust ourselves more than is warranted. There have been conflicts in my life that involved many people and had the capacity of much harm.

EMBODY THE KINGDOM--Doing 2 Timothy 1:1-2:19

2 Timothy 1:6-7

Make the decision.
Have courage.
Be who God intended.
How did God shape you?

Take the VARK learning style inventory and let Tangentrider know your scores.

2 Timothy 1:8-12

Have no shame.
Suffer TOGETHER
for the Good News of God's Reign.
God has called us as individuals and as church to embody his reign in the world. Too often, stuff gets in the way and we do not embody God’s reign as we should.

2 Timothy 1:13-14

Be a disciple.
Treasure your calling.
How did God shape you?

Calling is one way to begin answering this question. Consider the following questions:

What do you love and do well?
How will you live as a disciple in that calling?

2 Timothy 2:3-7

SUFFER together.
Serve the commander.
Compete with integrity.
Work hard for the harvest.
What gets in the way of your following God?
How will you partner to set that aside?

2 Timothy 2:11-13

Die and live.
Endure and reign.
Proclaim and be proclaimed.
Be loyal. He is.

2 Timothy 2:13-17a

Understand the Bible in order to do it.
  • The youngest book of the bible was written over 1,900 years ago.
  • The bible is written in languages that we do not speak: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek.
  • The bible was written in cultures not our own—some of which are VERY different.
  • We bring our time, language, and culture to our Bible reading.
  • What we bring to our reading often distorts what God is actually saying.

So, to understand what the Bible actually means, we need to understand the time, language, and culture of the passage. This takes skill, practice, and conversation with others.

If you would like to learn more about the skills of bible study, talk to Tangentrider and come to the Tuesday Gathering.

SERMON NOTES--Revelation, Introduction

INTRODUCTION
The Book of Revelation, Part 1
September 10, 2006
Pastor Charlie

1. THE BOOK OF REVELATION COMES WITH A GUARANTEED BLESSING. 1:1-3; 22:7

Benefits to knowing God’s plan for our future:
* Joy in the midst of affliction;
* Motivation to be the kind of person God wants me to be;
* Bolstering my trust and faith in the reliability of scripture;
* Drawing my heart to God in worship.

2. REVELATION WAS WRITTEN BY THE APOSTLE JOHN IN ABOUT 95AD. 1:1 ‘sending his angel to his servant John’

3. THE MAIN MESSAGES IN THE BOOK ARE PREDICTIVE PROPHECIES.

‘Prophecy’: a proclamation, a message from God

‘Predictive’: a message about future things

‘Apocalypse’: to unveil or reveal God’s plans that were previously unknown

Why the interpretation of predictive prophecies is difficult:
* Predictive prophecy is often full of figurative language.
* Predictive prophecies are often fragmentary.
* Predictive prophecies may have reference to two or more events.

Four main approaches to interpreting the book of Revelation:
* Revelation is about prophecies that have already been fulfilled.
* Revelation is a book of the history of the church.
* Revelation is a purely symbolic writing.
* Revelation is actual prophecy about end time events.

4. THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE BOOK IS JESUS CHRIST.

5. A PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE BOOK IS TO BRING HOPE.

6. AN OVERVIEW: 1:19
* What you have seen (1:12-18)
* What is now (chapters 2 and 3)
* What will take place (chapters 4-22)

Visiting the throne room of God – chapters 4, 5;

Opening the seven seals – chapter 6ff;

Blowing the seven trumpets – chapter 8ff;

Historic visions – chapter 11ff;

Pouring out the seven bowls – chapter 16;

Final judgments – chapter 17ff;

Thousand year reign of Christ - chapter 20;

New Heaven and Earth – chapter 21ff.

TANGENTRIDER BLOG--If Life is worship...

If every moment of life IS worship, then I must ask:
  • Am I worshiping the One who is worthy of worship?
  • Am I worshiping this One according to the truth?
  • How well am I being and doing this truth as I worship?
  • When coming together with other Christians how well am I encouraging their being and doing?

I am a God-worshiper. I am a Christ-follower. These are not day-by-day decisions; they are identity statements. The decisions are how and how well: How will I worship and follow? How well will I worship and follow?
