BIBLE STUDY METHODS--Writing a Big Idea Sentence

What is a big idea sentence? Dr. Alan Hultberg, of Talbot School of Theology, explains (click on Writing Big Idea Sentences for detailed instructions):

A "Big Idea" sentence is a simple sentence (i.e., a sentence with one subject and one predicate) that summarizes the main thought or theme or point of a paragraph.
Here are the basic steps:

  • Write the grammatical subject of the sentence by answering the question: What is this passage about? This part of the sentence should have no finite verbs (in fact, it is wise to stay away from verbs entirely if possible).
  • Write the predicate of a Big Idea sentence by asking, "What does the passage say about [insert the subject you had formulated in the first step]?"
  • Here is a sample of a big idea sentence for John 3:16-21: "The necessary trust in the unique given-as-Savior Son of God ...results in endless life and no condemnation and reveals the true nature of human works." Before teaching the passage, you will want to translate the sentence into normal English. For example: "Trusting Jesus is the only way to live without fear and without end."
Big Idea Sentences are a good way to get a handle on the important points of a passage. They force you to think about the text and sift out the big idea.

SERMON NOTES--Revelation 6-7

THE BEGINNING OF THE END
The Book of Revelation, part 3
September 24, 2006
Pastor Charlie

Key Questions

Question #1: Do these seven seals and bowls and trumpets happen all at the same time or do they happen one after the other?

Question #2: When does the rapture of God’s people, the church, take place in all of this?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The word rapture means “to be caught up.”
* Pre-tribulation view - the rapture takes place before the tribulation begins.
* Mid-tribulation view - the rapture takes place in the middle of the tribulation.
* Post-tribulation view - the rapture takes place after the tribulation.

Reasons for the pre-tribulation view:
* The rapture will be totally unexpected.
* Scripture teaches that believers will be protected from God’s wrath.1 Thessalonians 1:10 (See Romans 5:9 & 1 Thessalonians 5:9); Revelation 6:17
* It appears as if the Christians that experience the great tribulation were saved during the tribulation period and not before.
* The church is never mentioned after chapter 3 in Revelation.

Words of Caution:
*Do not adopt the pre-tribulation view based on the idea that God would never allow you as His child to suffer through such horrible things. 1 Peter 2:20-21
*Maintain a humble approach to your understanding of end time events.
