TANGENTRIDER BLOG--Honor Amidst Dispute

DSCF19151
Now, in a great house there are not only gold and silver dishes, but also wooden and baked clay, and some on the one hand to honor and some on the other hand to dishonor. If, then, anyone cleanse himself from these things, he will be a dish to honor, only having been set apart, useful to the household master, having been made ready for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:20-21 springer

2 Timothy 2:20-26

Conflict happens for we are human, do not see clearly, and often trust ourselves more than is warranted. There have been conflicts in my life that involved many people and had the capacity of much harm.

EMBODY THE KINGDOM--Doing 2 Timothy 1:1-2:19

2 Timothy 1:6-7

Make the decision.
Have courage.
Be who God intended.
How did God shape you?

Take the VARK learning style inventory and let Tangentrider know your scores.

2 Timothy 1:8-12

Have no shame.
Suffer TOGETHER
for the Good News of God's Reign.
God has called us as individuals and as church to embody his reign in the world. Too often, stuff gets in the way and we do not embody God’s reign as we should.

2 Timothy 1:13-14

Be a disciple.
Treasure your calling.
How did God shape you?

Calling is one way to begin answering this question. Consider the following questions:

What do you love and do well?
How will you live as a disciple in that calling?

2 Timothy 2:3-7

SUFFER together.
Serve the commander.
Compete with integrity.
Work hard for the harvest.
What gets in the way of your following God?
How will you partner to set that aside?

2 Timothy 2:11-13

Die and live.
Endure and reign.
Proclaim and be proclaimed.
Be loyal. He is.

2 Timothy 2:13-17a

Understand the Bible in order to do it.
  • The youngest book of the bible was written over 1,900 years ago.
  • The bible is written in languages that we do not speak: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek.
  • The bible was written in cultures not our own—some of which are VERY different.
  • We bring our time, language, and culture to our Bible reading.
  • What we bring to our reading often distorts what God is actually saying.

So, to understand what the Bible actually means, we need to understand the time, language, and culture of the passage. This takes skill, practice, and conversation with others.

If you would like to learn more about the skills of bible study, talk to Tangentrider and come to the Tuesday Gathering.

SERMON NOTES--Revelation, Introduction

INTRODUCTION
The Book of Revelation, Part 1
September 10, 2006
Pastor Charlie

1. THE BOOK OF REVELATION COMES WITH A GUARANTEED BLESSING. 1:1-3; 22:7

Benefits to knowing God’s plan for our future:
* Joy in the midst of affliction;
* Motivation to be the kind of person God wants me to be;
* Bolstering my trust and faith in the reliability of scripture;
* Drawing my heart to God in worship.

2. REVELATION WAS WRITTEN BY THE APOSTLE JOHN IN ABOUT 95AD. 1:1 ‘sending his angel to his servant John’

3. THE MAIN MESSAGES IN THE BOOK ARE PREDICTIVE PROPHECIES.

‘Prophecy’: a proclamation, a message from God

‘Predictive’: a message about future things

‘Apocalypse’: to unveil or reveal God’s plans that were previously unknown

Why the interpretation of predictive prophecies is difficult:
* Predictive prophecy is often full of figurative language.
* Predictive prophecies are often fragmentary.
* Predictive prophecies may have reference to two or more events.

Four main approaches to interpreting the book of Revelation:
* Revelation is about prophecies that have already been fulfilled.
* Revelation is a book of the history of the church.
* Revelation is a purely symbolic writing.
* Revelation is actual prophecy about end time events.

4. THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE BOOK IS JESUS CHRIST.

5. A PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE BOOK IS TO BRING HOPE.

6. AN OVERVIEW: 1:19
* What you have seen (1:12-18)
* What is now (chapters 2 and 3)
* What will take place (chapters 4-22)

Visiting the throne room of God – chapters 4, 5;

Opening the seven seals – chapter 6ff;

Blowing the seven trumpets – chapter 8ff;

Historic visions – chapter 11ff;

Pouring out the seven bowls – chapter 16;

Final judgments – chapter 17ff;

Thousand year reign of Christ - chapter 20;

New Heaven and Earth – chapter 21ff.
