SERMON NOTES--What God Says About Divorce – Part 1
HOW SHOULD I LIVE – PART 5

Bible Passage #1: Malachi 2:13-16.

TRUTH #1: GOD HATES DIVORCE
-Divorce is a breaking of faith between us and God.
-Divorce is a breaking of faith between husband and wife.
-Divorce is a breaking of faith between parents and children.

Bible Passage #2: Deuteronomy 24:1-4
-Guideline One: The man is permitted to divorce his wife if he finds something unpleasing or indecent about her.
--School A - each husband is allowed to define indecent for themselves but encouraged to place limits.
--School B – provided a wide-range of definitions of the word ‘indecent’ with no real limits.


TRUTH #2 GOD PERMITS DIVORCE UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES
-Guideline two: If the man chooses to divorce his wife he is to give her a certificate of divorce.

TRUTH #3: GOD SAYS IF YOU DIVORCE, DO SO IN A WAY THAT GIVES EACH PARTY THE BEST CHANCE TO HAVE A NEW START AND BE ABLE TO MOVE ON WITH THEIR LIVES.


Bible Passage #3: Leviticus 20:10

Key insight: In the Old Testament adultery was punishable by death not justification for divorce.

Passage #4: Matthew 5:27-32

TRUTH #4: ADULTERY IS COMMITTED WHEN A MARRIED PERSON PHYSICALLY, VISUALLY OR MENTALLY HAS SEX WITH SOMEONE OTHER THAN THEIR SPOUSE.

‘adultery’: Greek word is mocheia

TRUTH #5: GOD PERMITS DIVORCE WHEN A PARTNER IS SEXUALLY UNFAITHFUL TO THE MARRIAGE COVENANT.

‘unfaithfulness’: Greek word is pornia
