SERMON NOTES--What God Says About Divorce – Part 2
HOW SHOULD I LIVE? – PART 5
August 13, 2006

REVIEW:
Bible Passage #1: Malachi 2:13-16.
* TRUTH #1: GOD HATES DIVORCE

Bible Passage #2: Deuteronomy 24:1-4
* TRUTH #2: GOD PERMITS DIVORCE UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES.
* TRUTH #3: GOD SAYS IF YOU DIVORCE, DO SO IN A WAY THAT GIVES EACH PARTY THE BEST CHANCE TO HAVE A NEW START AND BE ABLE TO MOVE ON WITH THEIR LIVES.

Bible Passage #3: Leviticus 20:10
Key insight: In the Old Testament adultery was punishable by death not justification for divorce.

Bible Passage #4: Matthew 5:27-32 (see also Mark 10:1-12)
* TRUTH #4: ADULTERY IS COMMITTED WHEN A MARRIED PERSON PHYSICALLY, VISUALLY OR MENTALLY HAS SEX WITH SOMEONE OTHER THAN THEIR SPOUSE.
* TRUTH #5: GOD PERMITS DIVORCE WHEN A PARTNER IS SEXUALLY UNFAITHFUL TO THE MARRIAGE COVENANT.

Bible Passage #5: Matthew 19:3-12
* TRUTH #6: GOD’S ORIGINAL PLAN FOR MARRIAGE DID NOT INCLUDE DIVORCE AS AN OPTION.
* TRUTH #7: GOD DOES NOT REQUIRE YOU TO GET A DIVORCE EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE BIBLICAL GROUNDS FOR IT.
* TRUTH #8: DIVORCE EXISTS BECAUSE A HEART OF REBELLION IS WITHIN EACH PERSON.
* TRUTH #9: GOD DOES NOT PERMIT YOU TO GET A DIVORCE IN ORDER TO MARRY SOMEONE ELSE.

Views on Divorce and Remarriage:
1. No divorce, no remarriage;
2. Divorce, but no remarriage;
3. Divorce and remarriage for adultery or desertion;
4. Divorce and remarriage for whatever reason.

Bible Passage #6: 1 Corinthians 7:10-15

Key insight (v. 1): It is best if a single person does not touch anyone in a way that implies or arouses sexual urges.

TRUTH #10: AS A GENERAL RULE GOD DOES NOT WANT YOU TO DIVORCE.

TRUTH 11: IF YOU CHOOSE TO DIVORCE FOR REASONS OTHER THAN UNFAITHFULNESS OR DESERTION ON THE PART OF YOUR SPOUSE, THEN DO NOT REMARRY.

TRUTH #12: BEFORE YOU CHOOSE DIVORCE, USE SEPERATION, IF NECESSARY, AS A MEANS OF WORKING ON RE-BUILDING THE RELATIONSHIP.

Side Note: .It is best for a believer to not marry a non-believer (2 Corinthians 6:14-16)

TRUTH #13: GOD DOES NOT PERMIT YOU TO DIVORCE YOUR SPOUSE JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE A NON-CHRISTIAN.

TRUTH #14: IF YOUR NON-BELIEVING SPOUSE WANTS TO LEAVE YOU, THEN LET THEM GO.

TRUTH #15: IF YOUR NON-BELIEVING SPOUSE LEAVES YOU, YOU ARE NOT BOUND TO THAT MARRIAGE AND ARE FREE TO REMARRY.

Question: What are some of the things that can help prevent a divorce?

1. Focus less on self. Philippians 2:3-4
2. Focus more on God.1 John 1:7

Question: If you and your spouse are believers but your spouse acts like an unbeliever and leaves you, what do you do?

Question: Would God want two people to stay together even if they dislike or even hate each other? 1 John 2:11

Question: Can God forgive me? Micah 7:18-19
