TUESDAY GATHERING: February Worship Experience

Who is Jesus?

Matthew 28:16-20 (LKS translation): Then the eleven Jesus-followers traveled to the Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus directed them, and seeing him they bowed in worship but they were double-minded and Jesus came to them speaking to them, saying, “All decision-making authority was given to me, in heaven and upon the earth. Therefore go make Jesus-followers of all the peoples immersing them into the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep all I commanded to you; and look! I, I am with you all the days until the consummation of the age.”

What does this tell us?

1. It really is all about Jesus:
  • authority: "All decision-making authority was given to me, in heaven and upon the earth."
  • presence: "I am with you all the days until the consummation of the age."
2. We are all missionaries: we are commanded to go make Jesus-followers.
  • "Therefore go make Jesus-followers of all the peoples"
  • Missionaries go; they do not stay in the church building and expect others to come to them.
  • Making Jesus-followers means connecting people with the body and teaching them to follow Jesus. Jesus-followers connect with the body by openly declaring their decision in baptism: "...immersing them into the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..." Jesus-followers learn to be followers when other Jesus-followers teach them: "...teaching them to keep all I commanded to you..."
The Challenge: within the next six months go through Jesus: Who is he? with some friends who do not regularly attend church. If you love God and you love others then you will go make Jesus-followers; it's your job. If you are not sure about loving God, then we who are sure will challenge you to love him and follow him; that is our job.

February 14 we will practice some skills and work through some sample content to use in talking with your friends about loving God and following Jesus.
If you want to get a headstart, the plan for Feb 14 and a link to the four lessons is online: http://ministryhandbook.wikispaces.com/curriculum

SERMON NOTES—God Promises to Meet Your Needs – God’s Part and Your Part
Philippians 4:14-19
Pastor Charlie
February 5, 2006

And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus
(Philippians 4:19, NIV).

"A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed"
(Proverbs 11:25, NIV).

REASONS WE SHOULD BE GENEROUS:
Giving is an encouragement to others (v. 16).
  • When we give, our ministry expands.
  • When we give, we are acting like Jesus Christ.
Giving is an investment in the future (v. 17). 1 Timothy 6:18-19
Giving is a sacrifice to God (v. 18). Matthew 25:40

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD’S PROMISE (v .19):
The source of the promise is God.
The scope of the promise is huge. 2 Thessalonians 3:10; James 4:3
Myth #1: God wants everybody to be rich. Luke 12:15
Myth #2: God wants everybody to be poor. 1 Timothy 6:17-18
The supply of this promise is all the riches of Christ.
