GOING DEEPER--What's coming in November?

Tuesday Gathering: November: A People of the Table
The Doctrine of the Trinity is confusing. How can God be one God and Three persons? Plus, even if we can get a hold on the idea of the Trinity, what does it have to do with following Jesus day after day? Starting in November, the Tuesday Gathering will be considering the amazing truth about relationship, following Jesus, and theology.

SUNDAY COLLEGIUM--Should Christians be environmentalists?

Scriptural Data

Genesis 1:28-31
And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Genesis 2:15
The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

1 Corinthians 4:1-2
This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.

Informing Opinion

BE A CHRISTIAN ENVIRONMENTALIST
By MARY BETH BONACCI

At last -- a way to be Christian and popular at the same time. By
protecting the environment, you can do good and still be politically
correct.

Hold on. Before you run off to get your Greenpeace card, let's take a
little closer look at this whole issue of environmental protection.
The environmental movement is probably one of the largest social
movements of the late 20th century. And, as the pope points out, it
is in many ways a very important movement. But we need to understand
why it's important and what should motivate us to protect the
environment.
The Collegium concludes, as far as the editor recalls, that, yes, Christians should be environmentalists, but they need to be aware of their motivations and implementations. We should care for the environment to bring glory to God by living out our God given stewardship. In doing so, we must not compromise the welfare of humans, who are made in the image of God.

We are on a journey as fellow travelers.
Some of us have been journeying a long time and know more.
Others are new to the journey and have fresh eyes and fresh wonder.
Yet we are fellow travelers.
All have a voice.

So,

Live intentionally.
Look for the fingerprints of God.
Wonder.
Think.
Ask questions.

Bring your gathered bits to the Sunday Collegium, 11 AM in the college room.

SERMON NOTES--Revelation 17-18

THIS WORLD’S SYSTEM
The Book of Revelation, part 10
November 12, 2006
Pastor Charlie

The birth of this world’s system: Genesis 11:1-9 – The Tower of Babel

GOD’S DESCRIPTION OF BABYLON -THIS WORLDS SYSTEM Chapter 17
  • Its father is Satan (v. 3). Ephesians 6:12
‘a woman sitting on a scarlet beast’
  • Its focus is materialism (v. 4a).
‘dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls’

  • Its character is immorality (v. 4b). Jeremiah 51:7
‘she held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries’

  • Its business is prostitution (v. 5). Nahum 3:4; Ezekiel 16:15
‘the mother of prostitutes’
  • Relationships are commercial in nature focusing on what I get out of it.
  • The good things of life from God are misused for evil purposes.
  • Its religion is anti-Jesus (v. 6). John 15:18-20; 16:2
‘She is drunk with the blood of the saints’

GOD’S RESPONSE TO BABYLON – THIS WORLD’S SYSTEM Chapter 18
  • God condemns Babylon - this world’s system (v. 1-3).
  • God invites people to separate themselves from Babylon – this world’s system (v. 4). Jeremiah 51:45
  • To separate does NOT mean to stop all contact with or relationships with those who are part of the world’s system. Matthew 9:10-13; 1 Corinthians 5:9-10
  • To separate means to reject the worlds values, priorities, goals, wisdom, etc. Colossians 2:6, 8-10; 1 John 2:15-16; 1 Corinthians 3:18-19
  • God will bring swift judgment on Babylon – this world’s system (v. 9-10).
  • God will bring permanent destruction on Babylon – this world’s system (v. 21ff).
